On Sun Ling's birthday, Yu Hui, Su Li, and Bai Kang gathered at her rented place to celebrate. Upon arriving, they found Zhang Hui and the other three boys already inside. The small room was packed with both boys and girls; some were lounging on Sun Ling's bed while others sat on the floor, which was strewn with snacks and drinks. Sun Ling had prepared a large pitcher of rosé mixed with apple cider for everyone. Naturally, there was also a birthday cake, topped with a question mark-shaped candle, a clever nod to Sun Ling's age.
After singing the birthday song, just before Sun Ling made her wish, Su Li pulled out a card from their class leader and began to read it aloud dramatically. Sun Ling tried to snatch it back but pretended to be annoyed, allowing Su Li to finish in an overly sentimental tone. The classmates cheered and laughed, and amidst the chaos, someone accidentally turned off the lights.
Suddenly, everyone fell silent as the flickering candlelight illuminated their faces. "Let the happiest woman in the world make her wish and blow out the candles!" Su Li exclaimed. Blushing, Sun Ling murmured to herself before blowing out the flame. She took a knife and made a cut in the cake, and Yu Hui took over to slice it into even pieces.
Su Li chimed in again, "Let's open presents..." Each person had brought a gift, and with every item Sun Ling unwrapped, the room erupted in cheers. When she reached the gift from Su Li and Bai Kang, laughter filled the air as it turned out to be a sheer, transparent nightgown. A few mischievous boys shouted for Sun Ling to try it on right then and there, but she refused with a playful scoff and moved on to unwrap the last gift.
This one was from Zhang Hui. As soon as she opened it, everyone burst into laughter—it was a pair of connected palm-sized dolls. Zhang Hui held them up and demonstrated how to pull their legs apart; they began to wiggle suggestively, causing the boys to laugh uncontrollably while the girls giggled behind their hands. Su Li was the boldest of them all, snatching them up for closer inspection.
After all the gifts were opened, someone suggested playing cards. Sun Ling retrieved two decks, and they began an intense game of "Heart Attack." This game quickly spiraled into chaos; soon no one was sitting down as everyone knelt or crouched on the floor, anxiously staring at the pile of cards in the center. When a card was called out, seven or eight hands would dive for it simultaneously—girls screamed while boys seized the opportunity to playfully touch them. With everyone packed together, it was no wonder this silly game was so popular.
During one round of hand stacking, Yu Hui found herself at the bottom after being late to react. She got hit hard on the back of her hand by a chubby boy sitting next to her who had won that round. Wincing in pain, she frowned while he cheerfully took her hand to apologize. Embarrassed, she pulled her hand back just as someone shouted teasingly, "Hey Fat Pig! A toad trying to eat swan meat!"
The boy was indeed commonly referred to as Fat Pig; he didn’t mind it much anymore. His face turned red at the comment but fortunately for both of them, another round began soon after, sparing them any awkwardness. It was then that Yu Hui noticed Fat Pig frequently looking for opportunities to brush against her or steal glances at her. She couldn’t help but feel annoyed with her boyfriend Ma Song for not being there with her that night.
Yu Hui’s hair was styled into a thick braid, and she wore a cropped sleeveless shirt paired with snug peach-colored capris that accentuated her playful charm. As she knelt on the ground, her alluring curves were clearly visible; she knew Fat Pig couldn’t help but steal glances at her but felt powerless against his attention.
