"Of course, I won't let you, Mr. Jiang, pay without something in return. If you have any requests, feel free to mention them," Zeng Xianyi said.
"Zeng Lao, you're putting me in a bit of a difficult position here," Jiang Chen chuckled. This old man was quite cunning, putting on a pitiful face as if he were a hero who had fallen from grace and had nowhere to turn.
"Mr. Jiang, you are a remarkable person. I know that extraordinary individuals prefer to roam freely and dislike being constrained. As long as you agree to be the Chief Instructor, I can grant you the utmost freedom. Even if it’s just an honorary title of instructor, you can come by occasionally to offer guidance, just like Ye Jian Sheng," Zeng Xianyi persuaded.
"Let's not compare me to him; I haven't been here to offer guidance in many years," Ye Xiaoying said somewhat shyly. He had been defeated by Ishii Ansei's sword back in the day and had secluded himself at Changbai Mountain for over twenty years, diligently practicing his swordsmanship.
With Zeng Xianyi putting it this way, what could Jiang Chen do? He reluctantly accepted the position, taking on a nominal title that would lend him an official background. Although he didn't care much for such connections, having one could save him a lot of trouble.
"Zeng Lao, since you've put it this way, I won't refuse. But let me make it clear beforehand: as an honorary instructor, I won't have much time to guide these soldiers. However, since I've accepted the title, even if it's just honorary, I will still offer assistance," Jiang Chen stated.
"I understand," Zeng Xianyi replied with a smile upon hearing Jiang Chen's agreement. With someone as exceptional as Jiang Chen on board, the authorities would feel more at ease if they could integrate him into their ranks.
Now that Jiang Chen had agreed to be the Chief Instructor of the Martial Arts Special Forces, he would be considered part of the official structure. Knowing he was one of their own made Zeng Xianyi feel more at ease.
"Mr. Jiang—uh, no, I should call you Major General Jiang now. Due to the unique nature of our Martial Arts Special Forces, the rank of Chief Instructor is directly Major General Jiang," Zeng Xianyi explained. He wanted to draw Jiang Chen into the military fold and thus directly conferred him the rank of Major General.
Of course, Zeng Xianyi was aware that Ye Xiaoying wouldn't regard a Major General Jiang highly; let alone someone even more formidable than Ye Xiaoying like Jiang Chen. However, this was the highest rank he could bestow upon him; beyond that, he lacked the authority.
Jiang Chen didn't say much in response; he accepted the title of Major General without complaint.
"By the way, Major General Jiang, I'll introduce you to the other instructors shortly, including Liu Liangmei. They may not know you well and might be skeptical due to your youth. If there are any verbal conflicts later on, please don't take offense," Zeng Xianyi reminded him.
"I'm not that petty," Jiang Chen replied with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Ye Xiaoying glanced at Jiang Chen again; his eyelids twitched slightly. Jiang Chen was ruthless and unrestrained; anyone who offended him would likely face dire consequences.
"Instructor Liu!" Zeng Xianyi called out as he approached Liu Liangmei.
"Zeng Lao, is there something you need?" Liu Liangmei asked as she let her students practice on their own and stepped forward to meet Zeng Xianyi.
As for Ye Xiaoying and Jiang Chen, Liu Liangmei didn't spare them a glance.
"I'd like to introduce you to someone. This is Mr. Jiang; he will be our Chief Instructor for the Martial Arts Special Forces from now on," Zeng Xianyi announced.
His voice was strong and clear enough for not only Liu Liangmei but also the female Special Forces nearby to hear.
The once spacious room was filled with the continuous crack of whips, but everyone was momentarily stunned by Zeng Xianyi's sudden mention of the "Appointment Document." All eyes turned toward Jiang Chen.
