Zeng Xianyi declined and looked at Jiang Chen. “Mr. Jiang, please take the seat of honor,” Zeng Xianyi said with a smile.
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone except Ye Xiaoying froze in shock. If Zeng Xianyi had offered the seat to Ye Xiaoying, no one would have said anything, considering her age. But giving it to Jiang Chen? That was another matter entirely. Jiang Chen was the youngest present and had no qualifications to sit in such a position; he barely even deserved to be at the table.
“Brother Xianyi, please don’t tease this young man; he wouldn’t sit in the seat of honor anyway,” Li Yang chuckled, trying to pull Zeng Xianyi toward the seat.
However, before he could finish his sentence, Jiang Chen boldly sat down in the seat of honor. The atmosphere suddenly turned tense, and Li Yang’s expression darkened as he struggled to contain his anger.
“Little brother, it might be a bit inappropriate for you to sit here. Zeng Lao is older; shouldn’t we show respect for our elders?” If it weren’t for Jiang Chen accompanying Zeng Xianyi, Li Yang would have already gone over to lift him out of the seat for being so inconsiderate.
“I’m perfectly suited to sit here; do you have an issue with that?” Jiang Chen replied calmly, exuding an air of confidence.
Seeing Jiang Chen’s blatant disregard for propriety infuriated Li Yang to the point where he almost slammed his hand on the table. “Brother Xianyi, who is this young man? He certainly has a strong personality,” Li Yang said with a cold smile, his tone reflecting his dissatisfaction with Jiang Chen.
“This is Mr. Jiang Chen, the newly appointed Chief Instructor of the Martial Arts Special Forces I invited this time. Don’t let his youth fool you; his strength is unfathomable,” Zeng Xianyi stated seriously.
“Unfathomable…” Li Yang scrutinized Jiang Chen, clearly skeptical. The four divine beasts under Li Yang—Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise—were also sizing up Jiang Chen with furrowed brows. Although they didn’t voice their doubts, their eyes were filled with skepticism. A young man with unfathomable strength? Was this a joke? Had Zeng Xianyi lost his mind?
“Hey, kid, do you even understand basic etiquette? Zeng Lao is here; what gives you the right to sit in that seat? Move aside,” a sharp voice suddenly cut through the tension. It wasn’t from Li Yang or any of the Southwest Military Region personnel but from Liu Liangmei.
Liu Liangmei had already harbored discontent toward Jiang Chen; now seeing him so comfortably seated in the place of honor ignited her frustration. Unable to hold back, she shot back coldly.
“Instructor Liu, it was I who asked Mr. Jiang to take the seat of honor. Now let’s all sit down and eat; I’m sure everyone is hungry,” Zeng Xianyi said with a smile while gesturing for everyone to take their seats.
Liu Liangmei shot a glare at Jiang Chen but ultimately sat down reluctantly under Zeng Xianyi’s calming gaze.
Li Yang and the others were increasingly bewildered by this scene. It seemed that Zeng Xianyi’s subordinates were not united; in a military camp where everyone should be on the same page, how could such a disjointed team be effective?
“Well then, let’s just sit like this; we won’t bother with hierarchy anymore,” Li Yang said with a forced smile. With a young man like Jiang Chen occupying the seat of honor, he had no choice but to smooth things over for himself.
Li Yang could begrudgingly accept sitting beneath Zeng Xianyi but would not tolerate sitting beneath Jiang Chen. Thus, he declared that there would be no distinction in seating arrangements to ease his own discomfort as well as that of others.
After sitting down, everyone felt a lingering unease due to Jiang Chen’s abrupt actions, and the atmosphere grew heavy and oppressive.
“Brother Xianyi, this young man must have quite an impressive background if you hold him in such high regard. May I ask which Daoist Sect or family he hails from?” Li Yang asked with a smile.
