After returning to the inn, Lin Mingchang borrowed the front desk's telephone to call Xiao Zhou at the Spring City Police Station. He had previously entrusted Xiao Zhou with continuing the investigation into the Gui Xu Society's stronghold in Yunnan.
On the other end of the line, Xiao Zhou's voice crackled with static as he informed Lin Mingchang that the information available was limited, but they could preliminarily deduce that the Gui Xu Society's stronghold was likely located in Lijiang, Yunnan. Just as Lin Mingchang was about to thank him and hang up, Xiao Zhou suddenly said, "Brother Lin, Old Director is right here with me. He wants to speak with you."
A rustling sound came through the receiver, followed by a familiar booming voice. Lin Mingchang had been trained by Old Director Song Chongshan himself, and upon hearing his voice, he instinctively stood up straight. "Hello, Old Director."
"Lin Mingchang! I heard you’re heading to Yunnan. I have an old friend who is the Police Chief at Guiyang Police Station. He’s recently encountered a rather tricky case. I was wondering if you could spare a few days to help him out if you pass through Guiyang."
Lin Mingchang felt a sense of fate at play and chuckled softly. "Old Director, what a coincidence! We actually plan to pass through Guiyang on our way to Lijiang. Once we arrive in Guiyang, we’ll visit the Police Station and do our best to assist."
"Great! With your word, I’m relieved!" Old Director's voice was still as thunderous as ever, prompting Lin Mingchang to hold the receiver a bit farther from his ear.
The next day, the four of them packed their things, and Cheng Siyun arranged for a car to take them to the train station.
"Safe travels, everyone," Siyun said sincerely with a smile as she stood on the platform. "If fate allows, do come back to Changsha. I will treat you warmly."
The train whistle sounded long and loud as thick smoke billowed into the air. The four boarded the train bound for Guiyang and waved goodbye to Cheng Siyun from their window.
Siyun's figure gradually blurred in the smoke until it disappeared completely.
A few days later, with a long whistle from the steam engine, the train finally arrived at Guiyang Station. Shen Tong rested her forehead against the cool train window, watching the bustling crowd on the platform.
"We've arrived; let’s go," Lin Mingchang's voice came from beside her.
Shen Tong turned her head and inadvertently met Lin Mingchang's gaze; his deep eyes were filled with unmasked joy. She quickly looked away, feeling her cheeks warm slightly; this new dynamic still made her feel somewhat uneasy.
"The air in Guiyang is really nice," Fang Zigui stretched lazily and rubbed his stiff neck from the long train ride.
As they exited the modest Guiyang Railway Station, they were greeted by Guiyang’s unique mountain and water aroma—fresh and slightly sweet.
"Guiyang truly lives up to its reputation as a land of mountains and rivers; its terrain is particularly special," Lin Mingchang remarked as he surveyed his surroundings.
"Indeed," Fang Zigui nodded in agreement. "Guizhou is mountainous, and cities here don’t look as orderly as those on flat plains."
Xiaoshuang curiously observed the locals in their unique ethnic attire, whispering softly to Shen Tong and laughing until her eyes crinkled with joy.
Having accepted a commission from Old Director, the four of them decided to report to Guiyang Police Station first before finding an inn to settle down. They inquired along the way and walked through the streets of Guiyang towards the Police Station.
The streets of Guiyang were narrow and cramped, mostly dirt paths that twisted and turned like a mountain stream, winding and spiraling. After walking for about half an hour, they finally arrived in front of Guiyang Police Station.
Guiyang Police Station was an old two-story brick-and-wood building, with the words "Guiyang City Police Department" faded and worn on the sign above the entrance.
"Let's go," Lin Mingchang said softly, taking the lead as he walked forward.
