The sunlight that day was dazzlingly bright, as Lu Zhi and her maid had just returned home from Bai Xiang tower after purchasing some rouge. However, they were stopped at the door by a man.
Sitting on a tall, chestnut horse was a man with a long beard, who was staring directly at her.
The horse pawed the ground lightly, while the man wore a smile that seemed to embody the pride of spring: "You must be the Miss Eshuo of the Lu family?"
"Who are you?" Lu Zhi instinctively took a step back, eyeing the stranger.
Suddenly, he reached out from his horse, and a faint scent of fresh grass wafted through the air. In the next moment, her arm was seized forcefully, and before she could cry out, his large hand had already settled on her waist.
"Rogue!" the maid exclaimed in shock. "You have some nerve..."
He raised an eyebrow and scrutinized Lu Zhi, who was now in his embrace atop the horse, before turning to the maid with a smile: "It’s rare to see someone so devoted to their master; that’s quite commendable. But in a few months, you’ll be calling me ‘son-in-law.’ So hurry back and inform Lu Gong that I, Liu Bang of Si Shui Pavilion, have taken your young lady out for some fresh air. I promise to return her unharmed before nightfall!"
"And what if you are Liu Bang? Does that give you the right to abduct a woman in broad daylight?" Lu Zhi felt both alarmed and embarrassed. She swung her hand to strike Liu Bang but found it caught in his grasp.
"What? Didn’t Lu Gong mention it when he returned yesterday? At last night’s birthday banquet for the County Magistrate, Lu Gong personally agreed to our engagement. Both the magistrate and Brother Xiao He can attest to it!"
As he spoke, his smile took on a hint of mischief. "I extend my sincere invitation to my future wife to enjoy the spring scenery together; what wrong have I committed? Or does Miss dislike Liu and refuse to marry?"
Lu Zhi's face flushed as she struggled to pull her hand away, only for him to grip it tighter.
In eighteen years, he was the first man to boldly seize her delicate hand like this. His large palm enveloped her small one completely. He wasn’t the dashing and gentle husband she had envisioned, yet the playful smirk on his lips left her at a loss for words to refuse the marriage proposal.
In that moment, Liu Bang seemed to understand the hesitation in her heart and burst into laughter.
With a tight grip on the reins, the tall, slender horse galloped forward.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
It was her first time riding a horse, and she felt both frightened and intrigued as she watched the scenery bounce up and down before her eyes. The wind howled in her ears, and the crowd around them parted, making her feelings unusually complex.
“Don’t you like it? I absolutely love this feeling of being high above and galloping freely!”
Liu Bang's hand reached out from beneath her side to grasp the reins. His deep voice carried a tremor in the wind that inexplicably made her heart flutter.
“Let me down!”
Her voice was a bit sharp; after all, she was an unmarried woman, and in broad daylight, being held in such a possessive manner made her cheeks flush involuntarily.
“No way! When your father said he would marry you to me, I thought to myself that since I’m so much older than you, if you truly didn’t want to marry, I would just treat this engagement as a joke.”
As Liu Bang spoke, he suddenly tightened his hold on her, pulling her closer. “But the moment I saw you, I made up my mind. Even if you’re unwilling, I will keep you by my side for life! I want you to be my woman, sharing my bed in life and resting together in death!”
Lu Zhi was taken aback, looking back at the middle-aged man before her. He wore a grin that seemed mischievous and slightly wicked, as if what he had just said was merely a jest.
Yet, why did her heart feel a surge of joy, as if swept away by sweetness? He stormed into her world like a fierce wind, an invader with no mercy, determined to take her heart just like that?
