Brewing wine was primarily driven by Li Jiancheng's belief that the alcohol content of Tang Dynasty beverages was too low. He aimed to create a stronger liquor that would easily intoxicate others. In contrast, his own tolerance for alcohol was quite high, making it difficult for him to get drunk.
In reality, Li Jiancheng harbored a more sinister plan: to get Dan Bingbing drunk. Only by doing so could he take advantage of her. After all, his martial prowess was inferior to hers; how could he gain the upper hand otherwise? Although Dan Bingbing seemed willing to let Li Jiancheng take advantage of her, it came with a condition: he had to kill Li Shimin first.
However, there was still nearly a year and a half before he could act against Li Shimin. With such a long wait ahead, Li Jiancheng knew he couldn't afford to be patient. Thus, he contemplated how to deal with Dan Bingbing sooner rather than later. Getting her drunk was undoubtedly a feasible method.
Once that was accomplished, Dan Bingbing would have no choice but to accept the situation. What could she do against the Crown Prince of the Tang Dynasty? Moreover, Li Jiancheng had promised to help her eliminate Li Shimin.
But why couldn't Li Jiancheng just kill Li Shimin earlier? Setting aside whether he could even do so, even if he succeeded, it wouldn't serve his purpose. Unlike Dan Bingbing, who sought revenge, Li Jiancheng had no hatred toward his brother. Their conflict stemmed from the fact that there could only be one emperor.
Li Jiancheng's motive for killing Li Shimin was the throne itself. However, he understood that simply eliminating Li Shimin might not only cost him the throne but also his life. Therefore, he realized that in order to kill Li Shimin, he also needed to eliminate Li Yuanji and gain control over Li Yuan. Clearly, accomplishing all three objectives simultaneously would require more strength than the Eastern Palace currently possessed.
A week later, Li Jiancheng concocted a type of rice wine that was sweet and potent; most people wouldn't notice its strength until it was too late and they were already intoxicated. He named this new drink San Bu Dao—a name that not only suited its nature but also carried an element of provocation.
Sure enough, when Dan Bingbing heard the name, she felt challenged. Although she was a woman, she had a strong tolerance for alcohol. Upon learning about San Bu Dao, she found it amusing and insisted on trying it.
Li Jiancheng was eager for this opportunity but pretended to be reluctant, claiming that he had just made the wine and didn't have much of it. This only fueled Dan Bingbing's desire to taste it further. After much insistence from her, he reluctantly agreed.
That evening, Li Jiancheng dined and drank with Dan Bingbing and others. Despite its potency, Dan Bingbing quickly became drunk—her maid Liang Jing did as well.
Without hesitation, Li Jiancheng assisted Dan Bingbing into his room, successfully achieving his goal. Being reborn had its perks; otherwise, where else could he enjoy such an exquisite beauty? Before his rebirth, he hadn’t even been able to touch a woman—let alone someone as stunning as Dan Bingbing.
The next morning...
“Li Jiancheng!!!”
Dan Bingbing wrapped herself tightly in the blankets and glared at the still-dazed Li Jiancheng with fiery eyes.
Li Jiancheng’s confusion was feigned; after all, Dan Bingbing was in his room now, giving him a sense of confidence.
As for their current state—both lying together in the nude—Dan Bingbing surely understood what had transpired. With the deed done, what could she do now?
“Ahem…”
Li Jiancheng covered his vital area, awkwardly looking at Dan Bingbing. "Can I at least cover myself with the blanket first? Honestly, I'm really cold..."
"Serves you right for being cold!" Dan Bingbing snapped, her anger palpable. "You're nothing but a shameless scoundrel!"
"This... this really isn't my fault! I was drunk too!" Li Jiancheng replied, a hint of guilt in his voice as he forced a laugh. "As everyone knows, when a man gets drunk, he’s basically out of it! I figured we were just huddling together for warmth; it shouldn’t have been... um..."
As he spoke, he caught sight of the glaring bloodstains on the sheets. His voice trailed off abruptly.
The evidence was right there; he could no longer continue with his lies.
"Come on! Why did you stop talking?" Dan Bingbing glared at him, her teeth clenched in fury.
"Well..." Li Jiancheng awkwardly met her gaze. "I can only say that I will take responsibility for this!"
"Who cares about your responsibility?" Dan Bingbing growled, her anger boiling over.
"This is already done; whether you care or not doesn’t change anything!" Li Jiancheng chuckled nervously and leaned closer to her. "Honestly, we were bound to end up like this eventually..."
"Disgusting!" Dan Bingbing spat, her face flushed with rage. "Did you plan this all along? To get me drunk on purpose so you could take advantage of me?"
"Absolutely not!" Li Jiancheng interrupted her firmly. "You wanted to drink, and I was genuinely drunk too. I have no idea how you ended up in your room! I admit, I was tempted by your body, but I would never take advantage of someone in a vulnerable state. This was an accident—no, a beautiful accident!"
An accident? Dan Bingbing didn’t believe a word of Li Jiancheng's claims.
In truth, her anger wasn’t solely about being taken advantage of; it stemmed from feeling manipulated by him. She believed that this was a premeditated act on his part—that he had deliberately gotten her drunk to claim her.
"This really was an accident; why don’t you believe me?" Li Jiancheng said with a pained expression. "But you should know that if you kill Li Shimin, then you'll be mine. I was going to kill him anyway; this just happened sooner than planned."
Dan Bingbing scoffed, "Who knows? You might have intentionally set this up and prepared the drink just for today!"
"I..." Li Jiancheng faltered slightly; she had hit the nail on the head.
After pondering for a moment, he said earnestly, "It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe me now; you’ll have plenty of time to see what kind of person I really am later! Let’s talk about what comes next."
"What about the future?" Dan Bingbing scoffed. "Right now, I just want to kill you!"
"Then go ahead!" Li Jiancheng replied, exasperated. He simply lay down beside Dan Bingbing and closed his eyes.
Seeing Li Jiancheng lying next to her, completely exposed, Dan Bingbing's face flushed with embarrassment. Even a woman of her stature needed a man sometimes.
"Can you have some decency?" Dan Bingbing exclaimed, feeling both angry and ashamed as she pulled the blanket over him.
"We've done everything we shouldn't have; does it really matter anymore?" Li Jiancheng turned to look at Dan Bingbing and, without hesitation, wrapped his arms around her.
"Y-You let go of me!" Dan Bingbing stammered, panic rising within her as she grabbed Li Jiancheng by the neck.
Li Jiancheng remained unfazed, holding her tightly against him.
Dan Bingbing tightened her grip slightly, but Li Jiancheng didn't resist; he simply embraced her soft body.
Fuming with anger, Dan Bingbing eventually released her hold on his neck and gritted her teeth, cursing, "You're such a shameless scoundrel!"
