The person who walked in was Officer Zheng Jianfei, mentioned by Zhou Fengchun. He was in his early thirties, with a sharp jawline and a lean build that exuded resilience. His police uniform was faded from repeated washes.
"Police Chief, you called for me?" His gaze swept over the four strangers, and his brow furrowed noticeably.
"Jianfei, you're just in time," Zhou Fengchun said as he stood up to introduce the four individuals. "This is Zheng Jianfei, one of my most capable subordinates, currently in charge of investigating these three murder cases."
He then introduced Zheng Jianfei to Lin Mingchang and the others, explaining their identities and intentions. Zheng Jianfei nodded at the four, his expression remaining neutral.
The four exchanged glances, sensing the resistance in Zheng Jianfei's eyes. Clearly, he was not pleased with outsiders suddenly intervening in a case he was responsible for. However, when his gaze fell on Shen Tong, he momentarily froze before quickly turning his head away to mask his surprise.
Zhou Fengchun seemed oblivious to the subtle tension. He gathered the case files in his hands and waved them dismissively. "Jianfei, take these folks to see the crime scenes of the three victims. Let's start at Chen Zhi's house; it's the latest scene and likely to hold clues."
"Understood, Police Chief," Zheng Jianfei replied.
Leaving the Police Chief's office, Zheng Jianfei led the four through the corridor and out of the Police Station's main entrance. The sky outside was overcast, and a dampness hung in the air. The distant mountains were shrouded in mist, appearing hazy and elusive.
"Have you just arrived in Guiyang? I assume you haven't found accommodation yet?" Zheng Jianfei asked as he turned around.
Lin Mingchang responded, "Yes, we can investigate the scene first and discuss lodging later tonight."
As Zheng Jianfei walked toward a corner of the Police Station yard, he said, "There aren't many inns in Guiyang; most are quite basic, so don't have high expectations."
In one corner of the Police Station yard were two bicycles. Zheng Jianfei checked the tires before saying, "Conditions here are poor; we don't have cars. We ride bicycles for our investigations. You can use these two."
"That's fine; we’re not picky about that," Fang Zigui quickly replied politely.
Lin Mingchang and Fang Zigui each took a bike while Shen Tong and Xiaoshuang sat on the back seats. Zheng Jianfei rode ahead to lead the way.
The streets of Guiyang were narrow and winding, mostly uneven yellow mud roads that had become muddy after last night's rain. Shen Tong and Xiaoshuang had to hold tightly onto Lin Mingchang's and Fang Zigui's clothes to avoid falling off from the bumpy ride.
Along the way, wooden stilt houses were built into the mountainside, varying in height and connected by slippery stone steps leading to naturally formed small plateaus. Dried peppers hung below these houses, adding a splash of color to the scenery.
Lin Mingchang steadied the handlebars while asking Zheng Jianfei ahead, "Officer Zheng, after your investigation these days, what are your thoughts on these three cases?"
The four of them looked at Zheng Jianfei's silent back. After a long pause, he finally replied, "There are very few clues in this case, and the victims were all prominent figures, making the investigation quite challenging."
At that moment, Xiaoshuang curiously asked, "Officer Zheng, I’ve heard that there are many strange customs in Guizhou's Miao region, like the Gu Poisoning Art? Is that true?"
As soon as the question was asked, Zheng Jianfei's back suddenly tensed. He abruptly stopped the vehicle, turned around, and said with a grim expression, "Miss Ruan, in Guiyang, there are some things that should not be casually mentioned. The Gu Poisoning Art is something you should neither speak of, nor inquire about, nor even think about. Do you understand?"
