Lin Mingchang, Fang Zigui, and Ruan Xiaoshuang all noticed Shen Tong's unusual reaction. Shen Tong slightly shook her head at the three of them, signaling to discuss it later.
Chen Zhi's room remained in the same state as when the incident occurred—bed sheets were in disarray, and bedding was scattered on the floor. The windows were tightly shut, and the desk by the window was piled high with documents, with several books opened...
"What condition was Mr. Chen's body in when it was found?" Fang Zigui bent down to carefully examine the bed.
"Just like the first two cases," Zheng Jianfei said, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed. "He was already dead when discovered in the morning, with black liquid oozing from his eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. His expression was one of agony at the time of death."
Ruan Xiaoshuang took out her camera and began photographing the scene. She bent down to inspect Chen Zhi's bed and suddenly discovered something in the corner of the bed.
"Come look at this!"
The group gathered closer to inspect, noticing a small amount of dried black stains on the inner side of the bed's corner. The texture was different from ordinary bloodstains; it was more viscous.
"What is this..." Lin Mingchang reached out to see what it was.
At that moment, Shen Tong suddenly called out to stop him, "Don't touch it!"
Shen Tong shook her head at Lin Mingchang, who turned to look at her. In her view, the blue-purple Toxic Miasma was clearly more concentrated around the black stains.
Seeing this, Fang Zigui took out a scraping tool from his luggage and collected a sample of the black stain, placing it into a paper bag.
Lin Mingchang then continued to examine the bed. He knelt on the ground and carefully felt under the bed inch by inch. Suddenly he exclaimed and scooted forward, stretching his arm out forcefully—he pulled out a redwood box that had been stuck to the bottom of the bed.
The box was about palm-sized, with intricate mountain-and-water patterns carved on its lid.
"What is this?" Lin Mingchang looked at Zheng Jianfei, who shook his head in response, indicating that this box had not been found during previous searches.
Lin Mingchang cautiously opened the lid. Inside lay a piece of deep red velvet with a silver ornament approximately two inches long resting on top.
The shape of this silver ornament resembled neither a snake nor an insect; it was intricately wrapped in fine silver threads, beautifully crafted yet exuding an eerie quality.
Zheng Jianfei's expression changed dramatically upon seeing the silver ornament; fear flickered unmasked in his eyes. He quickly stepped forward and snapped the lid shut with a loud clap before taking it away.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Mingchang immediately asked.
Zheng Jianfei hesitated for a moment before lowering his voice to reply: "This is 'Chrysalis,' an item belonging to Miao Village's Gu Master; it's a medium for guiding Gu insects."
"Gu Master?" Ruan Xiaoshuang exclaimed in surprise, her eyes wide open. "You mean those who are said to raise Gu insects?"
Zheng Jianfei did not respond, tightly gripping the wooden box as he stared directly at Shen Tong. "What can you see?"
"Nothing," Shen Tong replied flatly, her gaze steady on him. "Only Death Qi."
Shen Tong remembered clearly that since meeting Zheng Jianfei, no one had mentioned her eyes' special ability. How did he know? Did Zhou Fengchun hear it from the Old Director and then tell him? Or perhaps... he already had some understanding of Shen Tong's eyes.
Zheng Jianfei's expression was complex as he met Shen Tong's gaze for a moment, but ultimately, he chose not to press further. He stepped back to the doorway, crossing his arms over his chest, quietly observing the four individuals inspecting the room.
As a few people exited Chen Zhi's house, the sun was nearly sinking behind the mountains, casting an ominous dark red hue across the sky. A chill mountain wind swept through, causing Xiaoshuang to shiver involuntarily.
