Meanwhile, another group of investigators made progress in their inquiry. Since the first victim, Peng Jintang, had been dead for over half a month, his home had been thoroughly cleaned, and even a Taoist priest had been invited to perform several rituals. 0

Zheng Jianfei believed there was no longer a need to investigate this case, so they headed directly to the residence of the second victim—British doctor Thompson. Thompson's house was located in the Foreigner district on the southern hillside of Guiyang City. The three of them rode their bicycles, bumping along the uneven dirt road. 0

After climbing a long stretch of mountain road, they finally spotted the prominent Western-style building. Wiping the sweat from his brow, Zheng Jianfei parked his bicycle and briefly introduced, "Doctor Thompson is quite well-known in Guiyang. It is said that he not only possesses excellent medical skills but is also very kind-hearted, often treating the poor for free. His wife and children are still on their way from England; this house is temporarily vacant, with only a butler and a maid here." 0

Lin Mingchang and Ruan Xiaoshuang parked their bikes and followed him. The local climate was humid and hot, and both had sweated profusely during the ride; Lin Mingchang's shirt was soaked through with sweat. 0

Zheng Jianfei approached the door and knocked. After a short while, a butler dressed in a black vest and wearing a small round hat opened the door for them. Zheng Jianfei greeted the old butler and walked straight inside. "Doctor Thompson was found in his study; let's go take a look." 0

As they stepped into the foyer, Lin Mingchang and Ruan Xiaoshuang immediately felt a noticeable change in temperature—the thick stone walls blocked out the oppressive heat outside. The living room of the Thompson residence was luxuriously decorated with taste. European landscape oil paintings adorned the walls alongside decorative hunting rifles, while Persian carpets covered the floor. 0

They climbed the stairs to the second floor where the study was located. The door to the study was ajar, and sunlight streamed through the intricately carved European-style windows, illuminating the tiny dust particles floating in the air. 0

The walls of Thompson's study were lined with bookshelves filled with books and documents. A faint mixture of leather, tobacco, and ink permeated the air. In the center stood a massive oak desk cluttered with various writing instruments, paper, and a typewriter, along with a half-filled pipe and a tobacco pouch. On the floor beside the desk, there was still a faint dark stain—presumably where Thompson had fallen. 0

"We have already conducted basic evidence collection but found no valuable clues," Zheng Jianfei stated as he stood with his arms crossed at the entrance of the study. 0

Lin Mingchang and Ruan Xiaoshuang were accustomed to his indifferent demeanor; they each moved towards different areas—the bookshelf and the desk—to begin examining the books, documents, and items present. 0

"Doctor Thompson seems quite interested in traditional Chinese medicine," Lin Mingchang remarked as he pointed to a row of medical books. "There are quite a few texts on traditional Chinese medicine here." 0

At that moment, he noticed a row of research notes placed in one corner of the bookshelf, labeled neatly in English with numbers corresponding to dates on their covers. Lin Mingchang took down several volumes to look through them and discovered that these were research records personally written by Doctor Thompson, filled with detailed content accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations. 0

Lin Mingchang had studied abroad in his early years. Although he was not familiar with some specialized terms, he could generally understand the content. 0

"These notes are quite interesting," Lin Mingchang said as he flipped through the pages. "Doctor Thomson is not only passionate about Traditional Chinese Medicine but also deeply interested in researching local Miao medicine. This contains a lot of information about the properties and uses of Miao herbal remedies. He even personally went to Miao Village to collect samples and has detailed records of some of the shamanistic practices in Miao medicine." 0
