Gao Jun's face was filled with satisfaction as he said, "It doesn't matter if you don't believe me; I will prove it to you." He then shifted the topic and continued recounting the past. "Two months later, Mayor Liu personally drove around to visit these artists, never mentioning anything about hiring them. Instead, he invited them to the outskirts of the city for a two-day stay to enjoy the scenery and paint. It was early autumn, and the mountain views were stunning. Given that Mayor Liu had some reputation and skill in the art community, these old gentlemen did not refuse. So, Mayor Liu brought them all here."
"Oh..." I nodded in understanding and asked, "So these two rows of houses were prepared for them?"
"Exactly! These artists only spent less than a week here, but they were already reluctant to leave. The beautiful mountains and clear waters, along with the serene environment, were simply a paradise for every artistic creator! Seeing how captivated they were, Mayor Liu knew his expectations had been met and subtly informed everyone that the location for the upcoming art academy would be here, and these two rows of houses would serve as residences for the professors."
"Hehe, if they want to live here long-term, they'll have to sell their souls to the school! That's quite a clever move!"
"These artists are smart people; they understood Mayor Liu's good intentions and sincerity. Coupled with their love for art, they didn't insist any longer and eventually became the first batch of professors at the academy." As he spoke, we arrived in front of the second row of buildings. Gao Jun paused and pointed at the two small buildings with a sense of nostalgia. "They played an indispensable role in the establishment of the academy!"
Suddenly, I became concerned about another issue. "How did you manage to rent a place here? It can't be cheap, right?"
Gao Jun chuckled and said, "I knew you'd worry about that. Don't rush; let me explain. As the academy grew larger and more professors joined, only distinguished masters qualified to live in these two small buildings. The room we are in was originally assigned to Teacher He, but due to his arthritis, he couldn't stand the humidity here and left it vacant. When he learned I was looking for a place for my graduation project, he recommended this spot and only charged me a nominal fee."
Teacher He was Gao Jun's graduate advisor, a highly respected old painter known nationwide. I lightly tapped Gao Jun on the forehead with my fist. "It really does seem like luck fell from the sky right onto your head."
"Stop messing around; let's go upstairs," Gao Jun laughed as he dodged playfully. "Remember this: Building 2, Unit 3, Room 321. Next time you come alone, don’t get lost."
"I'm not as foolish as you think! Room 321 is easy to remember—3 is Unit 3, 2 is the second floor, and 1 is the room number. Am I right?" I said while following Gao Jun into the hallway.
Perhaps due to its age, the hallway felt somewhat dimly lit; fortunately, it wasn't too high up, and we reached the door in just a few steps. As Gao Jun took out his key, a door across from us creaked open, revealing a couple who looked like they were in their forties—the man tall with a buzz cut and appearing quite spirited; the woman looked younger and attractive, dressed fashionably. Upon seeing us, they seemed somewhat surprised. The man spoke first, asking, "Are you two going to stay here?"
"Yes," Gao Jun quickly replied. "I am a student of Teacher He, and he sent me here. This is my girlfriend."
