He had asked me this more than once, and the situation felt just like a girl asking a boy, "Do you love me?" If I answered with even a hint of indifference, he would be downcast for quite a while.
"Of course I believe! Haven't those artists come yet?" I quickly changed the subject.
Gao Jun's face lit up with relief, but he said, "It’s okay if you don’t believe me; I will prove it to you." Then he shifted the topic and began recounting past events. "Two months later, Mayor Liu personally drove to visit these artists one by one. He never mentioned hiring them; instead, he invited them to the suburbs for a two-day stay to enjoy the scenery and paint. It was early autumn then, and the mountain views were stunning. Plus, Mayor Liu had some reputation in the art community, so these old gentlemen didn’t refuse. He brought them all here in one car."
"Oh..." I nodded as if understanding. "So these two rows of houses were prepared for them?"
"Exactly! These artists only stayed here for less than a week before they were completely enchanted. This picturesque and tranquil environment is every artist's dreamland! Seeing how reluctant they were to leave, Mayor Liu knew his plan had worked. He subtly informed everyone that the location for the new art academy would be here, and these two rows of houses were designated as residences for the professors."
"Hehe, if they want to live here long-term, they'll have to sell their souls to the school! That's quite a move!"
"These artists are clever; they understood Mayor Liu's intentions and sincerity. Coupled with their love for art, they didn't insist any longer and eventually became the first batch of professors at the academy." As he spoke, we arrived in front of the second row of buildings. Gao Jun paused and pointed at the two small buildings with a sense of nostalgia. "They played an indispensable role in the establishment of the academy!"
Suddenly, I grew concerned about another issue. "How could you rent a place here? It can't be cheap, right?"
Gao Jun chuckled and said, "I knew you would worry about that. Don’t rush; let me explain. As the academy grew larger and more professors joined, only distinguished masters qualified to live in these two buildings. The room we’re in was originally assigned to Teacher He, but he has arthritis and couldn't stand the humidity here, so it remained vacant. When he learned I was looking for a place for my graduation project, he recommended this spot and only charged me a nominal fee."
Teacher He was Gao Jun's graduate advisor, an esteemed painter well-known nationwide. I lightly tapped Gao Jun on the forehead with my fist. "It really does rain pies from heaven, landing right on your head."
"Stop joking around; let’s head upstairs." Gao Jun laughed as he dodged playfully. "Remember this: Building 2, Unit 3, Room 321. Next time you come alone, don’t get lost."
"I'm not that foolish! Room 321 is easy to remember—3 is Unit 3, 2 is the second floor, and 1 is the room number. Am I right?" I said as I followed Gao Jun into the hallway.
Perhaps it was due to the old house, but the hallway felt somewhat dim. Fortunately, the floors were not high, and it didn't take long before we arrived at the door. Gao Jun had just taken out his keys when the door across the hall creaked open, revealing a couple who appeared to be in their forties. The man was tall with a buzz cut, looking quite spirited; the woman seemed younger, with a beautiful face and stylish attire. Upon seeing us, they appeared a bit surprised, and the man was the first to speak, asking, "Are you two going to live here?"
"Yes," Gao Jun replied quickly. "I'm a student of Teacher He; he sent me here. This is my girlfriend."
"Great! Great!" The woman seemed very pleased. "Now we have neighbors! I love interacting with young people. It would be boring if an old man moved in."
