“Teacher He is quite a master. If we could be neighbors with him, we should definitely pay a visit,” the man said, gently countering his wife's words. He then introduced himself, “I’m Zhao Feng, a teacher who just arrived at the academy not long ago. You probably don’t know me yet. This is my wife, Jiang Ping.”
“Hello, Teacher Zhao! Hello, Teacher Jiang!” Gao Jun greeted politely.
Zhao Feng smiled warmly and said, “No need to be so formal. I prefer to be casual when I’m with young people. Since you just arrived, don’t hesitate to ask if you need any help.”
“Thank you, Teacher Zhao!”
“Ha ha, no need to thank me just yet.” Zhao Feng pointed to his wife beside him. “If it’s about household matters, you’ll find it much more effective to ask her than me. She’s not much older than you, so just call her Jiang Jie.”
Gao Jun smiled awkwardly and scratched his head. “No, no, no. It’s better to call her Teacher Jiang…”
Jiang Ping laughed heartily and said, “You can call me whatever you like! If you need anything, feel free to come find me.” With that, she affectionately linked her arm with her husband’s and waved goodbye as they headed downstairs.
The building featured old-fashioned solid concrete stair railings, and the steepness of the stairs made them disappear around the corner almost instantly, leaving an oddly eerie feeling.
“It’s really nice to have such friendly neighbors!” Gao Jun said as he exchanged glances with me, looking pleased.
“Of course it is! Plus there’s a beautiful sister,” I replied with a hint of jealousy in my voice. For some reason, I felt an inexplicable sense of rivalry towards the lovely Jiang Ping. Is it true that women are naturally jealous creatures?
“Is she really beautiful? I didn’t notice,” Gao Jun pretended to be confused.
“Hmph! You’re not being sincere!” I scoffed dismissively.
"Alright, alright, you know that in my eyes, you're the most beautiful, no one can compare to you." Gao Jun opened the door and said, "Enough of that, let's hurry inside and take a look."
Curiosity about the house overcame my desire to bicker further, and I followed closely behind Gao Jun as I stepped into the house, taking my first step toward a nightmare.
As soon as I entered, a musty dampness hit me like a wave, almost making me shiver. I frowned and asked, "Why is this room so cold and damp? No wonder Teacher He didn't want to stay here; how can an older person handle it?"
"It hasn't been lived in for too long, that's why," Gao Jun quickly explained. "When I first came in, it was even colder. But look, I've opened the windows and curtains; it's already much better. If we stay here for a day or two, it should return to normal."
Gao Jun's words made sense, and I nodded while starting to assess the condition of the room. Although it was an old house from decades ago, its functionality was still intact—one bedroom and one living room, complete with kitchen and bathroom, perfect for two people. What delighted me even more was that there was hot water available for bathing in the bathroom; such conditions were unimaginable at that time. I learned from Gao Jun that these two rows of buildings had their own boiler room dedicated to providing hot water and heating around the clock. Moreover, the entire place had been renovated at least once within the last five years; the creamy wooden panels and marble floor tiles still looked stylish even now.
The living room and kitchen were located on the southern side of the house, forming a larger overall space, while the living area jutted out slightly to the north like a small extension, creating an "L" shape reminiscent of someone lying down. Although the layout wasn't ideal, that north-facing living area infused this modest space with vitality. Through the open doors and windows of the living area, I could clearly see the lush greenery of Qingfeng Mountain winding in the distance, which was refreshing to behold. I exclaimed in delight and rushed into the living area, marveling, "This is amazing! The view here is so beautiful!"
Gao Jun followed me in and smiled as he said, "There's also a balcony outside; the view is even more expansive from up there."
