The knocking finally ceased, replaced by a suffocating silence. Suddenly, a dull thud echoed from the balcony, and something leaped onto it!
Though I was wrapped in a blanket, the icy sensation spread throughout my body. I lacked even the courage to glance up, helplessly wrapping myself tighter in the blanket.
With a soft creak, the balcony door opened, and I could feel that thing approaching me step by step…
Every hair on my body stood on end, and finally, that thing touched me through the blanket.
My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my mouth! Just then, I heard Gao Jun's familiar voice: "Xiao Yun, are you in there? What's wrong?"
Tears surged forth uncontrollably as I buried myself into Gao Jun's embrace, blanket and all, sobbing freely.
"Okay, okay, what happened?" Gao Jun held me tightly and stroked my hair. "It's my fault; I forgot to tell you that there would be a power outage tonight. Look how scared you are."
"How did you get in through the balcony… you scared me to death…" I said with a trembling voice.
"I forgot my keys," Gao Jun replied with an innocent expression. "You didn't answer when I knocked, and your phone was unreachable, so I had no choice but to climb up from the balcony. You scared me too; I thought something had happened to you."
I pounded my fist against Gao Jun's chest. "It's all your fault for turning off your phone… it's all your fault!"
Gao Jun defended himself helplessly: "I was at the exhibition hall; they don't allow phones there."
At that moment, I couldn't afford to get caught up in those details anymore; there were bigger questions that needed answers. "So… how many times did you knock?"
"I knocked once, but it was for quite a long time. You should have heard it."
"I heard you knock, but before that, I heard a strange knocking sound," I replied, my voice trembling as I recalled what had just happened.
"Strange knocking sound?" Gao Jun scratched his head, looking puzzled.
"It was inside our room, and it sounded like it was coming from the wardrobe..." I paused and shook my head. "No, maybe it was on the balcony. Could it have been that girl next door…?"
"The girl next door? Knocking on our balcony door?" Gao Jun clearly found it hard to believe. "Did you see her?"
"No. I only heard the knocking sound, but there was no one in the hallway or in the room. Then when I went to the balcony, I saw that girl standing by the window." As I said this, I realized how illogical it sounded: could such a small child really crawl between the window and the balcony? She wasn't even tall enough to reach the balcony. But what other explanation could there be?
"Is that so?" Gao Jun frowned thoughtfully. "I'll go check the balcony now."
Not wanting to be alone in the room or see that girl again, I stopped at the doorway and watched as Gao Jun walked toward the east side of the balcony.
"There's nothing here. I can't see anything," Gao Jun called back after glancing around.
Summoning my courage, I took a couple of steps forward. The window looked like a dark cave, empty and hollow—there was no sign of any girl.
"She was just here," I murmured to myself. Why did I always seem to be the only one who could see her?
"Maybe she went to bed? Kids love to do mischievous things. We should tell Teacher Zhao tomorrow to keep an eye on her; it's dangerous for her to be climbing around like that." Although Gao Jun tried to reassure me, it was clear he didn't believe my words at all.
"Can we not stay here anymore? I'm scared," I said to Gao Jun, my voice tinged with a half-pleading tone.
"How can we do that?" Gao Jun immediately dismissed my suggestion without a second thought. "Teacher He would definitely be angry." After a pause, he added reassuringly, "From now on, I'll always be home with you. I won't let you feel scared."
"But..." I wanted to argue further, but my thoughts were a jumbled mess.
Noticing my troubled expression, Gao Jun deliberately changed the subject. "Alright, stop thinking about those chaotic things. By the way, do you know what I discovered today at the library and the Exhibition Room?"
"What did you find?" His excited expression momentarily pushed my fear aside and piqued my curiosity.
"The previous tenant of this room was the most remarkable artist I've ever seen! No wonder when I walked into this place, it felt filled with artistic spirit. No matter what happens now, I'm not leaving... I have a feeling that I will create equally great works here!" As he spoke, Gao Jun seemed to slip back into his obsession.
I sighed helplessly; it seemed I had no choice but to stay. In truth, if it weren't for those inexplicable things, I wouldn't want to leave this place either.
