When I woke up again, the sky was already fully bright. Gao Jun was lying beside me, his heavy breathing indicating that he was in a deep sleep.
It seemed he wouldn’t be getting up until after noon. I shook my head helplessly; if this habit continued, his biological clock would be completely reversed.
The sound of light rain pattered in my ears. In this season, the local weather was always so unpredictable.
I quietly got out of bed and dressed, then opened the balcony door to let some fresh air into the room.
Suddenly, I froze and rubbed my eyes in disbelief. The clear sight before me confirmed that I wasn’t imagining things: there were fresh red stains on the outer handle of the balcony door!
I bent down to take a closer look. It was definitely blood! Since it hadn’t completely dried yet, I could even smell a faint metallic scent. The blood faintly showed the impression of fingers gripping it; clearly, this was a bloodstained handprint!
When had this been left? I had closed the balcony door last night, and there shouldn’t have been any blood on it then.
A cold breeze swept in, and a few icy raindrops splattered against my face. I shivered as a terrifying scene flashed through my mind: in the pitch-black night, a blood-soaked "person" stood outside on the balcony, gripping the doorknob. They must have wanted to come inside, and last night, the balcony door hadn’t been locked...
I couldn’t bear to think any further and hurried back to the bedroom, shaking Gao Jun’s shoulder. “Gao Jun! Gao Jun! Wake up!”
Gao Jun opened his eyes, looking weary. “What’s wrong? I just fell asleep…”
“Don’t sleep! You need to see this—there’s a blood handprint on the handle of the balcony door!”
“What? A blood handprint?” Gao Jun looked at me with confusion, still not fully awake.
"Just take a look for yourself, hurry up!" I urged, pulling at his arm.
"Alright, alright, I'm getting up," Gao Jun mumbled helplessly. "Don't drag me, let me put on my shoes first."
Once we reached the balcony, the cool breeze seemed to revive Gao Jun significantly. "What blood handprint? Where is it?"
I slowly turned the Balcony Door, as if afraid of disturbing something.
The red bloodstains glimmered ominously on the metal handle, shining in the dim light of the overcast sky.
"What happened here? Is that blood?" Gao Jun bent down, extending his index finger to wipe the handle, then licked his finger.
"Hey! What are you doing?" I quickly swatted at his hand, but it was too late. Instead of being frightened, he seemed unfazed by his actions, leaving me feeling somewhat exasperated.
"Yeah, it really is blood," Gao Jun said, lightly tasting it again. "Have you checked anywhere else? Are there more bloodstains?"
"I don't know; I didn't pay attention. I just saw this as soon as I opened the door..." I replied while scanning the surroundings. Suddenly, I gasped and pointed towards the eastern side of the balcony railing, trembling as I said, "Over there, over there too..."
Gao Jun followed the direction of my finger. I clung tightly to his arm as he walked ahead.
This patch of blood was imprinted on the inner side of the balcony railing, clearly showing the shape of a human hand.
A shiver ran down my spine; this bloodprint easily suggested that the "person" who left it had climbed up onto the balcony from here.
“It’s her, that little girl… she crawled over… from the house over there…” I clung tightly to Gao Jun’s arm, speaking in a rush.
Gao Jun looked at me and chuckled, “What are you talking about? That’s impossible… I scraped my leg a bit while climbing over the balcony last night. I touched my wound, and that’s how I left some marks while getting over the balcony and opening the door.” He pointed to his right knee, where there was indeed a small fresh scrape.
“How could that wound have bled so much?” I frowned. “And I remember your hands were completely clean last night, definitely not covered in blood.”
Gao Jun shook his head confidently. “It was dark then; you just didn’t notice. I washed my hands afterward; do you think I wouldn’t know? I didn’t want to worry you, so I didn’t mention it. Look at how scared you are!”
