"Really?" I looked up at him with tear-filled eyes, feeling a bit relieved. If that were the case, then the guilt of murder should be much lighter.
Gao Jun nodded, his gaze distant as he began to recall the events of that night. "Last night, after you fell asleep, I climbed in through the balcony and moved the Wax Figure to the window to admire and sketch it in the moonlight. Just as I was getting lost in my fascination, an unexpected guest climbed onto the windowsill—it was that guy. He must have seen that the room was dark but the window was open, so he climbed up the drainpipe."
I nodded; his analysis made sense. "It seems that guy really was a thief."
"But at that moment, I didn’t think about all that," Gao Jun continued. "My first reaction was that his arrival had something to do with the Wax Figure, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit panicked. When he saw someone in the room, he should have run away, but seeing my reaction, he changed his mind. I think he might have mistaken me for one of his kind." He smiled bitterly at this point.
"The man jumped into the room with ill intentions and saw the Wax Figure. Like you, he was startled at first, but soon he realized it wasn’t a real person and began to examine it curiously. But what did he know about art? He was looking at that magnificent piece with a profane gaze. At that moment, I came to my senses and shouted for him to leave."
Wax Figure? Art? A chill ran down my spine. If that man knew the horrifying truth beneath the wax layer, would he still have such interest?
"But that guy ignored me. Maybe the allure of the Wax Figure was too great? Or perhaps he didn’t see me as a threat at all? He even reached out his filthy hand to touch that sacred artwork. I couldn’t tolerate him ruining and defiling the Wax Figure, so I rushed forward to push him away. But he was much stronger than me; after a brief struggle, I found myself on the ground."
"When I fell, my hand touched a carving knife left in the room. Without thinking, I lunged forward and stabbed him right in the heart. At that moment, my mind went blank; all I could think about was protecting that Wax Figure. For its sake, I would do anything… But in the end, she was still destroyed by your hands…" Gao Jun shook his head in anguish.
"You killed him just like that?"
"Killed him? Yes… it was me who killed him," Gao Jun said gloomily. "After being stabbed, that man didn’t fall immediately; he broke free and jumped out of the window to escape. I only learned today from you that he had died. In this muddled state, I became a murderer…"
It was all because of that Wax Figure; how I wished none of this had happened! How I wished it were just another nightmare of mine!
But those bloodstains were so clear and real; they seemed to silently recount what had happened back then.
"What should we do now? Are you... going to turn yourself in?" I looked at Gao Jun in confusion, my heart burning with anxiety at the thought of the serious consequences of this situation.
Gao Jun shook his head firmly. "No! Absolutely not! I don't want to go to jail. Xiaoyun, since you already know the truth, you have to listen to me and help me keep it hidden."
I was already in a state of panic, but his words seemed to offer a glimmer of hope. I looked at him expectantly. "Is it really possible to hide this? What about the bloodstains?"
"As long as you do as I say," Gao Jun replied confidently. "I've already hidden the bloody clothes from the incident. The blood outside has been washed away by last night's heavy rain; as for the blood inside, we can wipe away what we can, and for what can't be wiped away, I have my own methods." He smiled mysteriously as he spoke.
Suddenly, a thought struck me, and I pressed on, "Is it like how you dealt with the handprint on the balcony? Tell me quickly, how did you do it?"
A smug expression crossed Gao Jun's face. "With my Brush. The seamless wood grain you saw was just a painting I used to cover up the bloodstain."
I realized with a start. The color and texture were so lifelike that even when I had examined it closely with purpose, I hadn't been able to detect any flaws.
