The caves varied in size, some piercing through massive pillars while others were only a few dozen feet deep. The sea of Underground Lava was not just home to the Demon Beasts within the molten rock, but also to the Lava Bats, which lived in honeycomb-like caverns, feeding on the Demon Beasts. Adult Lava Bats could have a wingspan of around twenty feet, their bodies covered in armor-like scales that allowed them to dive into the lava to hunt. Although Lava Bats were social creatures, they typically lived in small groups, and their numbers would increase in areas rich with food. However, despite both being bats, Lava Bats were vastly different in form and appearance from those that lived above ground. The largest bats Mo Wen had seen above ground had wingspans of only a few feet, while the smallest were merely palm-sized. Additionally, Lava Bats possessed large mouths similar to those of lava crocodiles; like their surface counterparts, they only consumed the blood of their prey. Because of this, the caves of Lava Bats were essential stops for adventurers seeking to collect Demon Beast corpses, as they offered one of the safest ways to acquire such remains in the Lava Sea.
At that moment, Mo Wen was inside a Lava Bat cave "collecting corpses." The vast cavern housed five Lava Bats hanging upside down from the ceiling, resting peacefully; a small human like him would hardly attract their appetite.
Emerging from the cave, Mo Wen felt quite pleased. This cave had likely not been visited by adventurers for a long time; not only had he found several Demon Beast corpses inside, but he had also discovered Lava Bat Grass—a medicinal herb that could only grow from the droppings of Lava Bats.
"Nani!" Standing at the entrance of the Lava Bat cave, Mo Wen felt a wave of heat rush toward him. This was unusual; winds only occurred in the Lava Sea under one circumstance: during a Lava Storm. It was not yet time to confirm whether it was indeed a Lava Storm; noises were already coming from behind him in the cave. The Lava Bats had clearly sensed this unusual wind as well. Mo Wen needed to leave quickly; compared to the oncoming wind, the five large creatures behind him posed a greater danger.
The five Lava Bats burst from the cave and took flight toward the rear. Mo Wen faced into the heat wave and released his senses but found no significant anomalies; clearly, the storm had not yet fully arrived. However, he detected several Demon Beasts fleeing toward his direction. Judging by their trajectory, they were escaping in alignment with the path of the Lava Bats—an instinctive behavior to seek safety from danger. Even if there wasn't a storm ahead, there would undoubtedly be great risks. Mo Wen returned to the entrance of the Lava Bat cave; it was the highest point nearby.
Lava Storms were unique phenomena of the Lava Sea. According to records related to Huo Lou about the Lava Sea, there had been one occurrence hundreds of years ago when a powerful storm stirred up lava throughout the entire sea area. Only a few adventurers managed to escape alive after entering during that time. Legends suggested that these storms were caused by massive Demon Beasts turning over deep within the Lava Sea or by fierce battles between powerful Demon Beasts down below. More rational thinkers believed it was simply due to eruptions of lava from beneath the sea's surface. Regardless of which explanation held true, one thing was certain: after each storm passed, it became an excellent opportunity for exploration, with throngs of people flocking to the entrance of the Lava Sea.
At that moment, Mo Wen pondered what he should do next. He knew he had to escape; however, getting away was not going to be easy. Setting aside whether he even had a chance to flee—if he did manage to escape, it would come at a high cost. His current stock of Xing Zhou would not support him for even a year on his own, let alone considering that the speed of the storm far exceeded his own ability to run for his life.
