At that moment, a clear and authoritative voice rang out, "What’s going on? Is there a disturbance here? Master Qian? It’s you again!"
Everyone turned to see the market administrator, Lin Wei, striding over with two male colleagues. Lin Wei clearly recognized Master Qian, and her expression immediately darkened.
Upon seeing Lin Wei, Master Qian shrank back like a mouse confronted by a cat, forcing a smile as he stammered, "N-no trouble here, Comrade Lin. We... we just came to have Jiang Master fix a few things."
Jiang Tao quickly stepped forward, picking up the fifty yuan on the table. He addressed Lin Wei, "Comrade Lin, you arrived just in time! This Master Qian brought his two 'nephews' to fix some items—these two right here." He pointed at the two "mangled" appliances on the ground. "They’re severely damaged. We agreed on a price of fifty yuan, which they’ve already paid. We’ve settled it; I’ll do my best to repair them, but if I can’t, the money won’t be refunded. You and the neighbors can bear witness."
Lin Wei glanced at the "junk" on the ground and then at Master Qian's obviously guilty expression and the uneasy demeanor of his two companions. It was clear to her what had transpired. She shot a cold glance at Master Qian and nodded at Jiang Tao, saying, "Alright, I’ll keep an eye on this. Go ahead with your repairs. If anyone dares to cause trouble here or backs out later, I’ll send them straight to the police station!"
With Lin Wei’s words, the onlookers grew bolder and began accusing Master Qian and his companions of deliberately causing trouble. The three men turned red with embarrassment but dared not retort; they could only stand aside in frustration, waiting for Jiang Tao to make a fool of himself.
Jiang Tao took a deep breath, tucked the fifty yuan into his pocket, then squatted down to begin his "performance."
He first picked up the deformed fan. Instead of hastily dismantling it, he observed it carefully before taking out a hammer and pliers. He cautiously tapped and adjusted the dented casing. His movements were slow but precise; each strike and squeeze seemed perfectly timed as if he understood the metal's properties intimately. Soon enough, he had roughly restored the uneven casing to its original shape. Only then did he open it up to reveal the electric motor inside. He cleaned off the dust with a brush and took out a small oil can to lubricate the bearings. Before reassembling it, he casually brushed his fingers over the motor's coils and several connection points while subtly channeling his mental power to perform an "energy repair" on the slightly damaged coils and reinforce some critical connections.
The entire process flowed smoothly with an inexplicable rhythm that captivated the onlookers; even Lin Wei was drawn in by his skill.
After about half an hour, Jiang Tao reassembled the fan, wiped the sweat from his forehead, plugged it in, and pressed the switch. Instead of making strange noises as expected, the fan began to spin smoothly and quietly with powerful airflow!
"Wow!" The crowd erupted in astonished gasps.
"My goodness! It’s really fixed!"
"What craftsmanship! Incredible!"
"Is this really that broken fan from earlier?"
Master Qian and his two companions looked extremely grim; they could hardly believe that Jiang Tao had actually managed to repair what seemed like a scrap fan!
Ignoring their astonishment, Jiang Tao set aside the repaired fan and picked up the most severely damaged radio. All eyes were now focused on him; this was truly the real test!
Jiang Tao opened up the radio casing to reveal broken circuit boards and damaged speakers inside. He deliberately let everyone see how badly it was damaged. "Look here," he said, "the circuit board is broken into several pieces, and the speaker cone is torn; normally this would be beyond saving."
He sighed dramatically before continuing, "But since I’ve already taken your money, I might as well give it a try. Please bear with me; this might take some time, and I can’t guarantee success."
With that said, he lowered his head and began his "extreme repair" operation. He took out a soldering iron, tweezers, multimeter, and other tools, fully immersing himself in his work. He carefully cleaned up the broken circuit board before taking fine copper wire to attempt a "flying lead" connection for the severed circuits. This process required immense precision and skill; more importantly, he needed to secretly channel large amounts of mental power to guide energy flows for microscopic "welding" and reinforcing at the break points of copper foil to ensure good contact. He also repaired the speaker by using energy repair techniques on its damaged coil connections while carefully patching up its torn cone with thin paper and glue.
As time ticked by, beads of sweat began to accumulate on Jiang Tao's forehead; his face paled slightly from overexertion of mental power. The crowd shifted from curiosity to tension and anticipation. Meanwhile, Master Qian's trio paced anxiously nearby—glancing at Jiang Tao one moment and then at Lin Wei—their hearts racing.
Finally, after nearly two hours of intense focus, Jiang Tao straightened up with a long sigh of relief. He fitted together the makeshift radio casing and inserted batteries.
Everyone held their breath.
Jiang Tao took a deep breath before slowly turning on the switch…
A harsh rustling sound pierced the air... Master Qian wore a smug smile on his face. However, in the next moment, amidst the rustling, a garbled yet recognizable broadcast emerged: "…Central People's Broadcasting Station…"
Though the voice was hoarse and filled with static, it was indeed audible! A radio that had been smashed to bits had actually been repaired by him!
The crowd fell into a stunned silence, only to erupt into even more enthusiastic applause and gasps than when the Fan had been fixed.
"My goodness! You can actually fix this?!"
"Unbelievable! Truly unbelievable!"
"Master Xiao Jiang, take me as your apprentice!"
Master Qian and the two thugs were completely dumbfounded, their faces ashen as they stood frozen in place, as if under a spell.
Jiang Tao wiped the sweat from his brow. Though he felt utterly exhausted, his heart soared with satisfaction. He turned to Master Qian, his voice weak yet filled with conviction: "Master Qian, everything is fixed. Fifty bucks—it's genuine, no deception."
Master Qian opened his mouth but couldn't utter a single word. Under Lin Wei's stern gaze and the scornful, mocking looks from the crowd, he realized he had lost today—thoroughly and completely. He dared not linger any longer and signaled to the equally stunned thugs to grab the barely functioning radio and the repaired Fan. Amidst a chorus of boos, they slinked away from the crowd in disgrace.
Watching their retreating figures, Jiang Tao couldn’t help but smile wearily yet victoriously.
"Trying to challenge me? Hmph!"
