I pressed my forehead in anguish as I opened the friend request.
The request came from a stranger with a female character ID, but her profile picture was so familiar that I recognized it at a glance. It was the chibi couple avatar that Zhe had drawn for me. His was a Knight wielding a sword, and mine was a Mage snuggling beside him. Together, they represented him shielding me from all harm while I bestowed blessings upon him—truly one of a kind in the entire world.
I could still remember how happy I felt when he sent me the completed avatar. I had thrown myself into his arms, my cheeks burning with excitement. "So, in your heart, I'm the little Mage who needs protection! Zhe, you're so sweet." I embraced him with a face full of happiness, and at that moment, all we saw in each other's eyes was pure love.
"Of course, Xiao Ya, I love you. I want to give you the best of everything."
Those past memories cut through me like sharp shards, leaving me bruised and bleeding. A wave of emotions surged within me, and my vision darkened as nausea washed over me. Trembling, I clicked "Accept" on the friend request, praying that this was all just a nightmare.
Or perhaps someone could wake me up and tell me this was nothing but an absurd dream.
"Ding!" The system notification sounded like the shattering of my heart as I opened my eyes in disbelief.
"You are now friends with 'Gentle Mage'. You can start chatting now."
The account bearing my chibi avatar, 'Gentle Mage', sent me a sweet voice message.
"Knight brother, I'm waiting for you at the entrance of the 'Misty Forest' dungeon! Tonight's team battle can't happen without you..."
I jolted awake because 'Misty Forest' was precisely the dungeon they used to visit most often—a place Zhe had promised me he would never set foot in again.
I grabbed my phone and hesitated before typing a reply. "I have something to do right now; I can't make it."
I still couldn't believe it; I needed to see and hear him explain everything for myself. My bright and cheerful Zhe, who had worked so hard to change for me—how could he possibly be someone who was so immersed in Zhe that he would deceive me?
I would rather believe that the account of Zhe was hacked, or that he was engaged in some kind of undercover operation that I didn’t know about, than to accept that Zhe would betray our agreement and return to that Zhe. I refuse to believe it!
At that moment, my phone rang; it was the delivery of the dinner I had ordered. Having been caught up with urgent work, I had already missed dinner time. Now, with this unexpected turn of events, I felt completely drained.
I forced myself to go downstairs to pick up the takeout, feeling dazed as I stared at my phone. Strangely, there was still no reply from the other side. As I walked back after collecting my food, I passed by the internet café at the community entrance. A familiar figure inside caught my eye and sent a shiver down my spine.
