The following week, at the appointed time, Hui Nai arrived punctually at Qing He’s clinic.
The hypnosis began once more. Everything was just as it had been last time; the quiet treatment room was specially arranged with soft lighting, and the music was carefully selected to help one relax completely.
Suddenly, Hui Nai felt a wave of panic. She was getting closer to the truth, yet fear and anxiety gripped her. Would the true cause of Ryoji's death be revealed? What could it possibly be? Was there really someone who had harmed Ryoji? How could she bear to revisit that sorrowful night and endure the pain once again?
Before she could dwell on her thoughts, Qing He’s whispers filled her ears, and involuntarily, Hui Nai fell back into a dreamlike memory. This situation truly felt like a dream one sees after falling asleep.
She was about to see Ryoji; how wonderful it would be if it were real. She would embrace him, ask for his forgiveness for her stubbornness and doubts, and tell him that she still loved him deeply, never having let go for even a moment.
However, before Hui Nai could meet Ryoji, an unexpected interruption occurred.
Qing He’s phone suddenly rang loudly, the sharp sound piercing through the air as if signaling an urgent and important situation. To Hui Nai's partially hypnotized and not fully conscious mind, the noise was particularly jarring, causing her head to throb. Unable to help herself, she groaned.
Qing He was taken aback, too shocked to answer the call; he simply hung up. He brought Hui Nai out of her trance: “Hui Nai, please speak! Let me know you’re okay!”
What terrible luck—two hypnosis sessions interrupted by unforeseen events. First, Hui Nai had inexplicably fallen asleep; now it was Qing He’s phone call that had disrupted them. Hui Nai looked unwell; her face was pale and ashen, her expression vacant as she stared at Qing He as if he were a stranger or an unfamiliar object.
In that instant, Qing He recalled many patients he had seen in the psychiatric hospital whose brains had been severely damaged from long-term medication. They looked at others with that same vacant gaze.
“Hui Nai, how are you? Please don’t be hurt!” A panicked Qing He had forgotten the basic knowledge required of a doctor; he gazed helplessly at Hui Nai, utterly unsure of what to do.
After what felt like an eternity, Hui Nai finally seemed to awaken. The expression on her face was one of someone just coming out of a dream, which for some reason made Qing He feel very uncomfortable. Her voice sounded strangely odd as she addressed him: “Qing He-kun, I’m fine. I’m okay. Thank you.”
It is rare for two good friends to exchange such polite and formal words. However, Hui Nai's language and expression seemed anything but normal. Qing He was certain that her sudden awakening during the hypnosis session had caused her some mental distress.
Hui Nai simply said, "I'm going back now," grabbed her bag, and rushed out without a proper farewell.
Watching Hui Nai's retreating figure, Qing He felt a deep sense of worry in his eyes, as if there was something more troubling him.
After returning home, Hui Nai did not contact Qing He again.
Every day, there were many patients coming in for consultations. In this society, everyone seemed to be busy with their own thoughts and struggles, making their minds so fragile that they desperately needed help from others.
As a psychologist, Qing He knew he shouldn't complain about such things, yet he couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy. Thus, he had no time to think about Hui Nai.
According to their agreement, Hui Nai was supposed to come in for her next session a week later. Although the last session had ended in such an unexpected manner, with a little adjustment, it should not pose a significant issue.
Doctor Qing He even specifically canceled a few appointments to focus solely on waiting for Hui Nai's arrival, hoping that this time he could provide her with a conclusive result through hypnosis.
However, after waiting all day long, he still did not see Hui Nai. This was highly unusual. It was impossible for her to have forgotten. Could the failed hypnosis have left some terrifying aftereffects? The thought made Doctor Qing He restless.
He decided to call her. Yet the phone rang for a long time, only to be met with the sound of no one answering. This situation persisted until nightfall, well past Doctor Qing He's usual closing time.
It seemed that Hui Nai would not be showing up.
