At that moment, one of the attackers suddenly stopped his assault. He retreated to a corner and pulled out a small vial, about to open it. Fang Zigui reacted swiftly, taking a quick step forward and kicking the vial out of the man's hand. The vial flew out of his grasp and through the window.
Seeing this, one of the three attackers whispered a few words in Miao Language, and the trio quickly retreated, leaping out of the window and disappearing into the night.
"Chase!" Lin Mingchang exclaimed as he lunged forward but stumbled slightly, having to brace himself against the window frame for support.
"Lin Mingchang!" Shen Tong hurriedly approached, noticing that Lin Mingchang's arm had been cut by the short knife of the earlier attacker without him realizing it. Although the wound was small, it had already begun to swell, with the surrounding skin taking on an abnormal dark purple hue.
Fang Zigui stepped forward to examine it, his expression darkening. "This is bad; there's poison on the blade."
Shen Tong noticed that a faint blue-purple toxic miasma was already emanating from Lin Mingchang's wound. She immediately looked at Zigui anxiously. "Zigui, this poison is similar to the aura from the three deceased. Is there any way to detoxify it?"
Fang Zigui was drenched in cold sweat as he shook his head. "I don't understand Gu Poison; conventional antidotes won't work on this type... It seems we can only seek help from Old Miao Doctor!"
In just a few moments, Lin Mingchang's breathing began to quicken, his complexion darkening as beads of cold sweat formed on his forehead. Fang Zigui quickly bandaged Lin Mingchang's wound as best as he could, and together with Shen Tong, they supported him as they hurried towards Miao Qing's home in the dark.
It was deep into the night when Old Miao Doctor and his granddaughter Miao Qing were already sound asleep in their stilted house, which was shrouded in darkness. Hearing a sudden urgent knocking at the door, Miao Qing initially thought it might be a villager suffering from an emergency.
She quickly got up, lit an oil lamp, threw on a coat, and opened the door. "Doctor Fang? At this hour—" Her gaze shifted to Lin Mingchang, and her expression changed immediately. "What happened?"
She turned to glance around before ushering the four inside, closing the door tightly and securing the latch.
Fang Zigui spoke rapidly, "We were attacked; Lin Mingchang has been poisoned! We need Old Miao Doctor's help!"
At that moment, Old Miao Doctor had also awakened to the commotion. Despite being roused from sleep, his eyes were remarkably clear. He gestured for Fang Zigui and Shen Tong to help Lin Mingchang onto a wooden couch in the inner room.
Then Old Miao Doctor instructed Miao Qing to light two more candles so he could carefully examine Lin Mingchang's wound.
The Old Miao Doctor gently wiped away the blackish-purple liquid seeping around the wound with a cloth, then leaned in to sniff it. In a low voice, he said, "It's Golden Money Bee Poison..."
Shen Tong asked anxiously, "Can it be cured?"
The Old Miao Doctor shook his head. "I can't cure it; I can only temporarily control the toxicity. To completely detoxify... we need to find a Gu Master."
He then gestured for Miao Qing to bring over a weathered wooden box. From it, he took out seven different herbs and carefully ground them in a stone mortar.
After grinding them into a fine powder, he added a few drops of dark medicinal liquid and some water, slowly mixing them into a thick paste that emitted a strange odor, a blend of herbs and some animal scent.
The Old Miao Doctor applied the paste to Lin Mingchang's wound. After a few minutes, he wiped away the dried paste and reapplied a fresh layer.
After repeating this process several times, Lin Mingchang's breathing began to stabilize noticeably, and his complexion was no longer as dark as before, but he still remained unconscious.
