I suspected I was seeing things and rubbed my eyes.
It was real; my mind felt like it had been struck hard, buzzing with confusion.
Twelve weeks pregnant?
How could this be possible? I had undergone a sterilization procedure!
Sitting on the couch with the report in hand, my hands trembled uncontrollably.
Various possibilities flashed through my mind: Could the hospital have made a mistake? Was the sterilization unsuccessful? Could it be...
No, it couldn't be.
The hospital wouldn't make such an error, and I had gone for annual check-ups after the procedure, all of which had been successful.
There was only one explanation: Liu Yun had betrayed me.
I didn't know how long I sat on the couch; all I remembered was that it had grown completely dark outside, yet I hadn't turned on the lights.
The entire house was shrouded in darkness.
The sound of the door lock turning pulled me back to reality.
Liu Yun was home.
"Why aren't the lights on?"
She turned on the lights and, seeing me sitting in the dark, smiled and asked, "What are you daydreaming about?"
I remained silent, simply raising the report in my hand.
Liu Yun's smile froze on her face, and her complexion turned pale in an instant.
Her lips trembled, but she couldn't find her voice.
"Care to explain?"
I heard my own voice sounding unusually calm. "What is going on?"
Liu Yun remained silent for a long while before finally taking a deep breath and saying, "Yang Jianyun, I don't know how to tell you... I... I'm having someone else's child."
My heart felt as if it had been violently torn apart, leaving me breathless with pain.
I struggled to contain my anger and sorrow and asked, "Whose?"
"This isn't important," Liu Yun shook her head, "what matters is that I want to keep this child."
"Not important?"
My voice rose sharply. "You slept with someone else behind my back and got pregnant with their child, and you say that's not important?"
"I know you're very angry, and you have every right to be," Liu Yun looked at me with a determination I had never seen before. "But I have to tell you, I want to be a mother."
Her words infuriated me completely. "You want to be a mother? So all those years you've been telling me about the DINK Declaration were lies? For that lie, I underwent a sterilization procedure!"
"It wasn't a lie," Liu Yun defended herself. "At that time, I truly didn't want children. But people change, and so do I."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
I could no longer control my voice. "If you've changed your mind, why didn't you discuss it with me? We could have adopted a child together or even tried IVF!"
Liu Yun lowered her head. "Because... because I fell in love with someone else."
That sentence hit me like a heavy blow.
I stood up and staggered toward her. "Thirteen years... thirteen years of marriage, and just like that it changes? I've sacrificed so much for you, and you betray me like this?"
"I'm sorry," tears welled up in Liu Yun's eyes. "I know this is very unfair to you, but I can't keep lying to you or myself anymore."
"Unfair?" I let out a bitter laugh. "This is the biggest joke! I've given everything for you, and this is the outcome?"
Liu Yun looked at me and suddenly became calm. "Yang Jianyun, please calm down. I know you're hurting right now, but given the circumstances, we might as well part on good terms."
"Part on good terms?"
My vision turned red with anger. "I want to see that man right now! Bring him here so he can explain everything to me face to face!"
"Impossible," Liu Yun said firmly. "What happened between us doesn't need to involve anyone else."
