Three months had passed, and the events had faded into the background. The scars on my body had healed, but my relationship with A Mei had grown even more distant. Life had to go on.
One evening, I left work early, intending to spend some time playing with my son. As soon as I stepped through the door, I heard noises coming from the bedroom. My blood ran cold.
With icy hands and feet, I pushed open the bedroom door and witnessed the most unbearable scene of my life. My most trusted brother, Lai Shenglin, was lying naked in my bed with my wife!
In that moment, my mind went blank. I couldn't recall how I charged forward; all I remembered was feeling like a crazed beast as I lunged at Lai Shenglin, raining punches down on him.
"Fuck you! I treated you like a brother, and you sleep with my wife!" I roared.
Lai Shenglin was taller and stronger than me, and he quickly overpowered me, pinning me to the ground. As he tightened his grip around my neck, he laughed, "Zhu Quan, stop pretending. Who doesn't know A Mei married you for your looks? You think she really loves you? You're nothing but a pathetic loser!"
I struggled desperately but was held down firmly by him. A Mei stood nearby, shouting sharply, "Zhu Quan, are you done yet? I've had enough of you!"
"Get out of here!"
Suddenly, a small voice came from the doorway: "Daddy... Mommy... what are you doing?"
It was my five-year-old son, standing at the entrance with wide, terrified eyes fixed on the chaotic scene before him.
Hearing his voice, Lai Shenglin released his grip. Seizing the opportunity, I pushed him away and rushed to embrace my son.
"It's okay, sweetheart. Daddy and Mommy are just playing," I said through gritted teeth as I carried him out of the room.
That night, the house was eerily silent.
My father-in-law merely said to A Mei that her behavior was inappropriate and moved on.
I sat in the darkness, feeling that my life had lost all meaning.
The next morning, A Mei returned to pack her things and coldly said to me, "Zhu Quan, let's get a divorce."
"This house belongs to my family; you can pack your things and leave."
"Fine, if we’re getting a divorce, I’ll take our son with me," I resolved.
"You must be dreaming."
"Our son is coming with me; he has the surname Lin, not Zhu. Don’t forget you’re the one who married into my family," A Mei mocked me.
I shouted, "I am the child's father! I have the right to take him!"
A Mei scoffed, "Father? Zhu Quan, I don’t even know who his real father is; how can you be so sure it’s you? It’s laughable."
My entire world was collapsing.
Is my son not even mine?
I frantically grabbed her by the shoulders, "Why? Why are you doing this to me?"
"You’re hurting me! I’ll call my dad to kill you..."
My mind was a chaotic mess.
"Not my son?" Those five words pierced my heart like daggers over and over again.
All the sacrifices I made over six years had vanished in an instant.
Seeing me on the brink of madness, A Mei's face flashed with fear as she hurriedly shouted, "Dad! Mom! Help! Zhu Quan has gone crazy!"
I didn’t even realize how I had tightened my grip around her neck; it felt as if my fingers were acting on their own.
Once, this woman was my wife, someone I was willing to give everything to protect.
And now, she was telling me that even the son I cherished like life itself might not be my flesh and blood.
"Why! Why are you doing this to me?" My voice was hoarse, tears blurring my vision.
