After marriage, I returned to being a homemaker while his career flourished. My friend Su Qing jealously remarked that I was lucky and simply lying back to win at life. I thought I was a winner too until I witnessed a melodramatic scene that could rival any soap opera.
Last week, my mother had a hypertension episode, so I went to the hospital to get her medication. Coincidentally, in the outpatient hall, I saw Chen Zimo, who should have been out of town "expanding his territory." He was carefully supporting a young girl whose belly was at least seven months along.
I hid behind a pillar and heard her sweetly calling him "husband." At that moment, all the struggles of starting a business and our loving relationship turned into a joke. A chill ran through me as if I had fallen into an ice pit. The girl looked barely over twenty and appeared quite innocent as she nestled in Chen Zimo's arms with a blissful expression. The tenderness in his gaze towards her was something I once knew intimately; now it pierced my heart like a needle.
I had forgotten how I made it home. My mind was filled with images of them cuddling together—so warm it hurt my eyes. All the hardships we endured together and the sweet words he had said now felt like ruins in retrospect. Tears fell uncontrollably; no matter how much I wiped them away, they just kept coming.
The phone on the table buzzed back to reality.
I wiped my face and picked up the phone.
It was an email from a private investigator about that girl. I clicked it open and took a deep breath.
Her name is Bai Ruo; she is 23 years old and graduated last year before joining Chen Zimo's company as his secretary. The email included hotel records filled with details dating back over a year. Two months later, Chen Zimo bought her a large apartment in the city center. Soon after, Bai Ruo became pregnant.
So that scene at the hospital was for her prenatal check-up.
As I scrolled down, I saw intimate photos of them—at restaurants, in cars, outside her apartment... My stomach churned violently.
The phone rang again; the caller ID displayed "Husband," which felt particularly ironic. I pinched myself and forced my voice into its usual tone as I answered.
"Lin Xi, what are you busy with? It took you so long to pick up," Chen Zimo's voice remained as gentle as ever.
"I just washed my hands; my phone was in the bedroom," I lied calmly.
"I'm back from my business trip but will be late tonight," he said cheerfully. "I just signed a big deal and will take the team out for dinner."
"Husband is amazing! Do you want me to join you?" I asked feigning concern.
"No need; you don’t like socializing anyway. Don’t worry; I'll drive and won’t drink," he replied in such a sweet tone it could almost be squeezed for water.
