He turned his head slightly, a smile in his eyes. "Alright, what do you want to talk about?"
"I don't know if you were serious last time, but I need to make it clear that I've been divorced."
"I know. So what?" His tone was calm.
"I... I've been through a failed marriage, and I don't have much confidence in relationships anymore. It might be hard for me to... fully invest myself."
"And you're excellent; you should find someone better. That person shouldn't be me."
The smile on his face gradually faded, and his expression turned serious. "Lin Xi, in my heart, you are the best. You always have been."
"But..."
"I understand that you might not be able to accept this right away; that's okay." He interrupted me. "Just give me a chance, don't push me away, alright?"
Suddenly, he leaned closer, his warm breath brushing against my cheek, his voice deep and clear: "I like you, Lin Xi. I've liked you for a long time."
My heart felt like it had been struck by something forceful. This face, this heartfelt confession—who could resist?
In the end, I remained silent.
As Ji Yan and I walked out of the elevator, we were met with the sight of Chen Zimo squatting at my doorstep like a lost dog. His eyes were red and unkempt; when he saw me, there was a look of desperation and pleading in his gaze. But that look no longer softened my heart even a little.
Ji Yan followed closely behind me. Upon seeing Chen Zimo, his expression turned cold as he silently positioned himself beside me.
Chen Zimo's gaze darted between me and Ji Yan before finally locking onto Ji Yan as if he were ready to explode with anger.
I expressionlessly took out my keys to open the door. As I passed by Chen Zimo, he suddenly grabbed my wrist tightly.
"Lin Xi, who is he? What is your relationship with him?"
I shook him off. "What does it have to do with you?"
"Lin Xi, I need to talk to you!"
"I have nothing to say to you. Just leave."
"I broke up with her!" he said urgently.
"Oh, and then what?" I looked at him coldly.
His anger flared at my indifference as he grabbed me again, trying to pull me into his embrace. "Lin Xi, I was wrong! I can't live without you!"
His grip on my wrist was painfully tight. "Let go!"
In the next moment, Chen Zimo was suddenly pushed away with great force, crashing against the wall. Ji Yan stood in front of me and landed a punch squarely on Chen Zimo's face.
"Get lost!" Ji Yan's voice was icy.
Chen Zimo was momentarily stunned by the blow, but then he retaliated fiercely, and the two of them instantly began to grapple with each other.
I hurriedly opened the door. "Ji Yan! Stop fighting! Come inside!"
Ji Yan finally relented, straightening his collar before following me into the room.
I slammed the door shut behind us. Outside, Chen Zimo's frantic banging and cries echoed:
"Lin Xi! I was wrong! Please come back with me! Don't you want me anymore?"
The noise was driving me crazy. Suddenly, a pair of warm hands covered my ears, blocking out the chaos outside.
I looked up to meet Ji Yan's deep gaze, filled with concern and unspoken affection. The conversation we had in the car flashed through my mind, making my heart skip a beat.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here," he mouthed silently.
Compelled by an inexplicable force, I slowly leaned closer to him, burying my head in his warm chest and wrapping my arms around his waist.
He stiffened for a moment but then embraced me back tightly with even more strength. I could clearly hear the rhythmic beating of his heart.
Outside, the Property Security finally arrived and dragged away the still throwing a tantrum Chen Zimo.
"Lin Xi! I was wrong! Please forgive me!"
"Wife! Come home with me!" I suddenly yanked open the door and looked down at the disheveled Chen Zimo being held by security.
"First of all, we are already divorced. Secondly, don’t call me your wife anymore," I said, glancing at Ji Yan, who had unknowingly taken my hand, our fingers intertwined. "My boyfriend won't be happy."
Chen Zimo looked at our clasped hands as if all his strength had been drained away; he slumped down and stopped struggling.
After that day, I never saw Chen Zimo again. I heard from Su Qing that his company was on the brink of bankruptcy due to previous scandals and poor management. He took back the house and car he had given Bai Ruo. It turned out that Bai Ruo's child wasn't his but belonged to her ex-boyfriend, who also refused to acknowledge it. In the end, Bai Ruo had to return to her hometown with her parents, her reputation completely ruined in S City.
All of this was told to me by Su Qing; as I listened, my heart remained utterly unmoved.
"Do you still hate them?" Su Qing asked.
I shook my head. "Not anymore. I just returned the truth to them. What happened today is their own choice; it's karma."
"Lin Xi, it's time to board," a gentle voice called from behind.
I turned around and met Ji Yan's smiling eyes, which were filled with me.
He walked over and naturally took my hand. "The gallery called; they said your paintings are all set up. After the exhibition, come home with me to meet my parents, okay?"
I hesitated a bit. "Isn't that too soon? What if Uncle and Aunt don't like me…"
"Don't worry," he squeezed my hand reassuringly. "My mom has liked you for a long time; she's even your fan."
He leaned down and placed a kiss on my forehead.
"Lin Xi, from now on, you can leave all your worries to me."
Beside us, Su Qing exaggeratedly pretended to gag. "Ugh—so mushy! Can't you control yourselves? Pretend I'm not here!"
I looked at Ji Yan and smiled.
