My heart skipped a beat as I looked at Jiang Chi for help.
Jiang Chi responded calmly, "We've grown up together since we were kids, childhood sweethearts."
"Oh? Childhood sweethearts, that's nice!" The aunt's eyes flickered with interest. "So why are you only getting together now?"
That question… was quite tricky. I was racking my brain for an excuse when Jiang Chi gently squeezed my hand under the table and spoke, his tone carrying a hint of subtle warmth, "I didn't realize it before; I took a few detours. Now I've discovered that the best is right beside me."
His palm was warm, and my face flushed instantly.
Around us, there was a chorus of kind laughter and teasing.
"Oh my, A Chi can even say sweet words now!"
"It seems he's really fallen for her!"
Only Uncle Jiang remained expressionless, merely glancing at Jiang Chi.
After dinner, Aunt Zhou pulled me aside to the balcony for a chat while Jiang Chi was called into the study by his father.
"Xiao Qiao, Auntie can see that A Chi truly likes you," Aunt Zhou said, patting the back of my hand earnestly. "This child has always been principled; once he decides on something, no one can change it. I'm genuinely happy for both of you."
I forced a smile, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
"But…" Aunt Zhou's tone shifted, "A Chi's father might have some… thoughts."
"Huh?"
"You know our families have some business dealings with the Lin family. Previously… his father might have preferred A Chi to be with the daughter of the Lin family…" Aunt Zhou sighed. "Of course, now that A Chi has chosen you, his father won't say much; it just might take some time for him to accept it."
The Lin family's daughter? My heart sank as I recalled someone—Lin Wei, the school beauty from our high school and one of Jiang Chi's many persistent admirers. I had heard that her family had longstanding ties with Jiang Chi's family.
So there was this complication too.
When Jiang Chi emerged from the study, his expression was not good.
On the way back, the atmosphere in the car felt heavy.
"What did my dad… say to you?" I couldn't help but ask.
Jiang Chi tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Nothing much, just casual talk."
The more he said that, the more I felt something was off.
"Is it because of Lin Wei?" I asked tentatively.
Jiang Chi suddenly slammed on the brakes, the car screeching in protest. He turned to me, his gaze complex. "How do you know?"
"Just now... Aunt Zhou mentioned it to me."
He fell silent for a few seconds, then restarted the car, his voice a bit low. "Don't overthink it; it has nothing to do with you. I'll handle my own matters."
As the car drove into familiar streets, I glanced at his tense profile and suddenly felt that this charade of pretending to be a couple was far more complicated than I had imagined.
Ever since we went to Jiang Chi's house, our "business" frequency had noticeably increased.
We watched movies together on weekends, and during the week, he would conveniently "pick" me up after work, even though my home was in the opposite direction. He would sometimes show up outside my office building to bring me a cup of milk tea, drawing curious glances from my colleagues.
"Wow, Su Xiao Qiao, you’re really keeping it under wraps! When did you manage to snag handsome Jiang?" my colleague Xiao A teased with a wink.
"Just... going with the flow," I replied vaguely.
Jiang Chi's behavior was becoming increasingly "boyfriend-like."
One time, I was working late when a heavy rain started pouring outside. Just as I was worrying about how to get home, I received a message from Jiang Chi.
