"Where are you? I'll come pick you up," Jiang Chi texted.
"I'm still at the office. It's raining too heavily; don't come over. I can take a taxi," I replied.
"Stop with the nonsense. Just wait downstairs," he insisted.
When I finally made my way down, I saw his car parked by the roadside, its hazard lights blinking through the rain. He walked over with an umbrella and ushered me into the passenger seat before circling around to the driver's side, half of his shoulder already soaked by the time he got in.
"I told you not to come..." I felt a bit guilty.
"Shut up." He tossed me a dry towel. "Wipe yourself."
The car was warm, and the atmosphere was somewhat quiet. Raindrops pattered against the windows.
"Thanks," I said softly.
He didn't look at me, focusing intently on driving. "What are you being polite for?"
In that moment, I almost forgot we were just playing a role.
This "boyfriend" benefit didn't last long before we faced our first crisis.
That day, I was shopping with Chen Yaoyao when we unexpectedly ran into Lin Wei.
She was just as beautiful as I remembered, dressed in designer clothes with flawless makeup.
When she saw me, she paused for a moment before forcing a smile. "Su Xiao Qiao? Long time no see."
Her gaze shifted to Chen Yaoyao beside me and then back to me, carrying an almost imperceptible air of superiority.
"Yeah, long time no see," I replied casually.
"I heard... you and A Chi are together?" she asked nonchalantly, but her probing eyes betrayed her curiosity.
Here it comes, I thought.
"Yeah," I nodded.
Lin Wei's smile faltered for a brief moment before she regained her composure. "I really didn't expect you two... hiding it so well."
Her words were laced with sharpness.
Chen Yaoyao couldn't hold back any longer and shot back, "Hiding it? They've been childhood friends; it's only natural they developed feelings over time. What's wrong with that?"
Lin Wei glanced at Chen Yaoyao but ignored her, continuing to look at me. "How has A Chi been lately? His stomach isn't great; remember to remind him to eat on time."
The possessiveness in her tone was unmistakable.
I smiled lightly. "Thanks for your concern, but I already know all that, so you don't need to worry."
Lin Wei's expression darkened completely.
"Su Xiao Qiao," she stepped closer, lowering her voice, "don't think I don't know what's going on between you two. A Chi is just confused for the moment; who he ultimately chooses is still uncertain."
With that, she strutted away in her high heels, leaving me staring at her retreating figure, feeling a bit stifled.
Chen Yaoyao was fuming, stomping her feet. "What a piece of work! Who does she think she is? Xiao Qiao, just ignore her!"
I forced a smile.
That evening, I told Jiang Chi about my encounter with Lin Wei.
He was silent for a moment on the other end of the line. "What did she say to you?"
"Nothing much, just... casual chat," I downplayed it, not wanting him to think I was overreacting.
"Su Xiao Qiao," his tone turned serious, "don't believe her words. There's no possibility between me and her."
"I know." I said it out loud, but inside I felt a twinge of discomfort.
After hanging up, I stared at the phone screen where Jiang Chi's name lay quietly.
We were clearly pretending, so why did Lin Wei's appearance still affect me so much?
Her presence was like a stone thrown into a lake; though it didn't create significant waves, the ripples lingered in my heart for a long time.
I began to observe Jiang Chi more intentionally and unintentionally. He seemed unchanged—still picking me up from work as usual and going on "dates" with me on weekends.
However, he occasionally appeared lost in thought while looking at his phone or would step away when certain calls came in.
I knew this wasn't my concern. We were pretending; his personal matters were not mine to question.
Yet that little awkwardness inside me grew wildly like weeds.
