"Open your mouth," I said, pinching a potato chip between my fingers.
He snatched the chip from me, licking my fingers in the process.
I nearly dropped the entire bag of chips on his face.
"Jiang Chi! Be serious!"
"I am being serious," he replied innocently. "My girlfriend is feeding me, and I'm just showing my gratitude. What's not serious about that?"
What nonsense! All nonsense!
Later that night, as I was getting ready for bed, he took the hairdryer and helped me dry my hair. The warm air brushed against my ends, and his fingers occasionally glided through my strands with an indescribable tenderness.
I watched his focused profile in the mirror, feeling my heart soften completely.
"Jiang Chi," I couldn't help but ask, "when did you actually start liking me?"
I had always been curious about this question.
He paused for a moment, turning off the hairdryer, then wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on the top of my head.
"A long time ago," he said in a muffled voice.
"How long?"
"When you still thought of me as just a buddy, trailing behind me every day with your two little braids, not even wiping your nose when it dripped to your lips."
I was speechless. Wasn't that description a bit too realistic and damaging to my image?
"Then why didn't you say anything?"
"If I had, you would have run away," he chuckled lightly. "Besides, back then I was just a kid; what did I know about liking someone? Later on... I grew up and saw all those suitors around you, and I didn't dare to say anything."
"Then why did you ask me to pretend to be a couple? Weren't you afraid I had a boyfriend at that time?"
"I checked," he said confidently. "You were single."
I was taken aback. So you had this all planned out from the beginning?
"So," he turned my body to face him, his gaze serious, "Su Xiao Qiao, I liked you first. I've liked you for many, many years."
Looking into the deep affection in his eyes warmed my heart. I stood on my tiptoes and kissed his lips gently.
"Alright, I admit you're impressive."
After going public with our relationship, the happiest ones were undoubtedly my mom and Aunt Zhou. The two families quickly arranged a formal meeting. At the dinner table, the atmosphere was incredibly harmonious, with my mom and Aunt Zhou already discussing engagement details.
Uncle Jiang also softened his stern demeanor, looking at me with a much gentler gaze. As for Lin Wei, I heard she calmed down for a while after learning we were really together. Later, it seemed she was arranged to go abroad by her family.
Everything unfolded as smoothly as a fairy tale. Of course, life isn't a fairy tale, and there are occasionally small twists.
For instance, Jiang Chi's damn possessiveness.
At a class reunion, a male classmate who had pursued me in the past chatted with me for a bit too long, and Jiang Chi's face darkened immediately. On the way home, he was radiating low pressure the entire time.
"What's wrong with you?" I poked his arm.
He didn't reply but pulled me into his arms and kissed me fiercely until I could barely breathe before letting go.
"Stay away from those guys in the future," he warned.
"Can we be reasonable? We were just talking as ordinary classmates."
"Ordinary classmates shouldn't be that close!" He glared at me. "You're mine!"
Looking at his childish yet domineering expression made me both exasperated and amused. But it was also… a little sweet.
Being cared for like this felt pretty nice. Our relationship steadily progressed through playful bickering and growing warmth.
Jiang Chi took me to many places and showed me various sights. He remembered the food I casually mentioned wanting to try and would secretly prepare little surprises that I liked.
He was no longer just that gaming buddy Jiang Chi; he had become my boyfriend, my lover, the person I wanted to spend my life with in the future.
Sometimes I wonder what we would be like now if we hadn't made that "pretend couple" proposal back then.
Perhaps I was still secretly in love, and perhaps he was quietly watching over me. Fortunately, we did not miss our chance.
That night, Jiang Chi held me from behind and whispered in my ear, "Xiao Qiao, let's get married."
My heart stirred, and I turned to look at him.
There was no hint of jest in his eyes, only seriousness and anticipation.
"Okay." I nodded with a smile, my eyes slightly misty.
He pulled me tightly into his embrace.
The moonlight poured in through the window, gentle and lingering, just like the feelings we shared at that moment.
After all these years of twists and turns, it turned out you had always been here.
How wonderful.
He lowered his head and kissed away the tears from the corners of my eyes.
