Women are often too concerned about their appearance. It's hard to blame them, as everyone knows that while Lou Yijing has hundreds of disciples, she always treats the exceptionally beautiful ones with special regard. Beauty, at times, is not just meant to please men; it can also be used to win over a master, especially when that master is a woman.
"My master is waiting for Mr. Jiang in the back courtyard. Please follow me," Du Yujie said at the door, leading Jiang Chen inside. Although Du Yujie harbored resentment towards Jiang Chen, the sect had its rules. Today, Jiang Chen was a guest, and the master had specifically instructed her to treat him with courtesy, so Du Yujie had to suppress her personal feelings. As for Liu Liangmei, Du Yujie simply ignored her.
Liu Liangmei shook her head and smiled, not taking offense. She followed Jiang Chen into the back courtyard. Having arrived the night before without taking a close look at the estate, she now noticed that it resembled a Suzhou garden, with pavilions and towers, water pavilions and lotus flowers, winding paths, and elegant scenery.
The back courtyard was a garden covering over ten acres, connected to a lake where painted boats and flat-bottomed vessels were moored, perfect for leisurely outings on the water. Although this was on the outskirts of Bao Bei City, owning such a luxurious residence here indicated Lou Yijing's status on the island.
"She really knows how to enjoy life," Liu Liangmei remarked coldly as she gazed at the blooming garden.
"Indeed, it resembles an imperial palace," Jiang Chen replied with a smile. He held no particular opinion about such a lavish lifestyle; if one had the means to enjoy it, that was understandable. However, it was still an earthly residence—no matter how luxurious, it lacked the ethereal quality of immortality and could not escape being mundane.
At the water's edge stood a beautifully constructed pavilion. The weather was clear today with a gentle breeze. Lou Yijing wore a white Hanfu and was playing an ancient zither inside the pavilion, her long black hair simply tied behind her.
As Jiang Chen and Liu Liangmei entered, she slightly raised her head and smiled at Jiang Chen.
"How pretentious!" Seeing Lou Yijing playing the zither in such an ostentatious manner made Liu Liangmei frown. Though she maintained her youthful appearance through careful grooming, she knew she was no longer young and thus carried herself with decorum and composure. Yet Lou Yijing—despite being fifty—acted like a young girl flaunting her charms, which made Liu Liangmei feel uncomfortable.
Seemingly noticing Liu Liangmei's displeasure, Lou Yijing smiled and said, "Liu Liangmei, my master once said you are meticulous and composed, not arrogant or impatient—better suited to be Zhai Yue Pavilion Master than I am. But now I see my master must have been mistaken; you seem quite easily angered."
"Heh heh, Lou Yijing, have you never heard that 'a shameless person is just pretentious'? Stop flaunting your fifty years of charm here; Mr. Jiang has no interest in you. Hand over the Shuangyue Jade Pendant," Liu Liangmei said in a low voice.
There were grievances between Liu Liangmei and Lou Yijing; naturally, Lou Yijing's calm demeanor only served to irritate Liu Liangmei further.
Lou Yijing pressed down on the zither strings abruptly silencing the music.
"Haha, interesting! This is the first time I've seen you so flustered. What if I am shameless? Didn't my master teach you that women must understand one truth? A woman can lack everything—skills or knowledge—but she must never lack charm. If a woman cannot even attract a man's gaze, can she still be called a woman?" Lou Yijing laughed. Seeing Liu Liangmei's reaction only strengthened her resolve to win Jiang Chen over to her side.
