Zhao Lanping's family finally came to their senses, looking at Jiang Chen with complex expressions.
"I'm so sorry, esteemed one. I didn't mean to offend you," Zhao Lanping's mother quickly apologized.
Zhao Lanping, draped in monk robes, had a pale face filled with astonishment as she stared at Jiang Chen, unable to look away.
"Your daughter is fine now. You can go home. There are countless paths in life; you don't have to follow just one. Take care of yourselves," Jiang Chen said with a gentle smile.
The Smart Master understood Jiang Chen's implication and hurriedly instructed Jie Kong to take Zhao Lanping's family away. Zhao Lanping kept her gaze fixed on Jiang Chen, turning back every few steps as if she wanted to say something, but her parents pulled her along and left.
The courtyard fell silent, leaving only Jiang Chen and Smartphone.
"Please have a seat, Smart Master," Jiang Chen said, gesturing for the Smart Master to sit on a nearby stone bench. Although there was a hint of taking the lead in Jiang Chen's tone, Smartphone did not find it out of place.
Once seated, Jiang Chen and the Smart Master discussed Buddhist teachings. Although Jiang Chen was a cultivator, he had a considerable understanding of Buddhism as well.
As they talked freely, the Smart Master felt a sense of awe; he considered his own understanding of Buddhism to be top-notch, yet sitting with Jiang Chen made him feel like a mere drop in the ocean compared to the vast universe.
"Mr. Jiang, the Buddhist truths you speak of are beyond my current reach, but I yearn for them in my heart. I hope that one day I can attain the level you describe," Smartphone said respectfully with his hands clasped together.
"You will achieve it, Smart Master," Jiang Chen replied with a smile.
If Earth remained unchanged, the Smart Master estimated he might live another twenty years; reaching the level of Buddhist understanding that Jiang Chen spoke of seemed impossible. However, if the Mountain and Sea Secret Realm were to open and spiritual energy on Earth were to revive, it would be a different story altogether. A true High Monk like Smartphone would surely benefit greatly, and advancing his understanding of Buddhism would not be out of reach.
"Well then, Smart Master, I apologize for the disturbance today. I will visit again when I have time," Jiang Chen said as he stood up politely.
"Mr. Jiang, would you like to come with me to the back mountain to meet Brother Zheng Ding?" Smartphone suggested.
"No need; meeting you today is sufficient. I wouldn't want to disturb Abbot Zheng Ding," Jiang Chen replied with a smile.
Jiang Chen had come to Qingliang Temple merely to take a look and gauge the High Monk's understanding of Buddhism. Chatting with Smartphone had already given him a good idea, so there was no need to meet the abbot.
As Jiang Chen walked outside, Smartphone personally accompanied him.
"By the way, Mr. Jiang, do you have time around the beginning of autumn next year?" Smartphone suddenly asked.
"Smart Master, is there something going on?" Jiang Chen inquired.
"There will be an International Buddhist Conference in Malaysia next year. I believe your profound understanding of Buddhism would make your presence at the conference truly remarkable," Smartphone said with a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes.
What Smartphone didn't mention was that at the International Buddhist Conference, discussions about Buddhist teachings often saw monks from India and Thailand overshadowing those from Huaxia. With Jiang Chen's deep knowledge and being from Huaxia, his attendance could represent Huaxia and elevate its status in international Buddhism.
"I'll consider attending if I have time," Jiang Chen replied thoughtfully without committing either way.
Smartphone did not press further and escorted Jiang Chen to the temple gate, watching him leave.
