Wang Yong had barely returned to school when he was reported again for stealing a classmate's wallet. This time, the school took a firm stance and refused to give him another chance.
"I'm not going back! What's the point of studying that nonsense?" he retorted defiantly in response to his parents' questioning. "Aren't you both capable? Aren't you both officials? Just get me a job!"
Wang Mingyan was so furious that her hands trembled, and she raised her hand to slap him. It was the first time she had ever hit her son.
"You hit me? You actually dare to hit me?" Wang Yong covered his face, his eyes filled with resentment. "Fine, just wait and see!"
With that, he stormed out and didn't return home for three days. Wang Mingyan and her husband were frantic, searching the city for him, enlisting all their relatives and friends to help.
After three days of searching, they finally found Wang Yong at an internet café. Reluctantly, Wang Mingyan had to apologize to her son and promised never to lay a hand on him again.
Wang Yong finally returned home but refused to attend the vocational school his mother had arranged through connections. He spent his days idling at home and began associating with some troubled youths.
A year later, seeing that Wang Yong had turned eighteen and was constantly asking for money, Wang Mingyan thought it was time to intervene. "I pulled some strings, and the factory agreed to take you on as an apprentice," she said softly.
Wang Yong scoffed, "That meager salary from the factory—what good is it?"
"You both earn so much; what's wrong with giving me a little?" he added.
Despite his dissatisfaction, under his parents' insistence, nineteen-year-old Wang Yong begrudgingly went to the factory. However, within three days, he got into a fight with a supervisor and was fired.
In the following years, Wang Mingyan and Zhang Lan tried everything they could think of to find their son job after job, but each attempt ended in failure.
"What is wrong with this child?" Zhang Lan asked her husband through tears.
Wang Mingyan sighed, "He's still young and doesn't understand. Give it a few years; once he gets married, he'll change for the better."
Meanwhile, Wang Yong's two sisters and brother had already settled down and started their own families. At the age of twenty-five, while his siblings were discussing job promotions and children's education, he spent his days idling around, relying on his parents for support.
“Yong Zi, you’re getting older; it’s time to find a partner and settle down,” Zhang Lan suggested cautiously.
“Why are you rushing me?” Wang Yong slammed the dishes on the table. “How can I find a wife without money? Why don’t you give me some?”
In the past two years, Wang Yong's temper had grown increasingly volatile, and he began to drink heavily. A few times when he got drunk, he beat up Wang Mingyan and his wife, threatening them with a knife if they resisted.
The most recent incident occurred when a drunken Wang Yong, upset that his parents wouldn’t give him money for alcohol, publicly tore at his mother’s clothes and even pushed the over sixty-year-old Wang Mingyan to the ground, kicking her mercilessly.
“Don’t you have a pension?”
“Where is it hidden?”
“Hand it over, or I’ll kill you!” He raised a chair as if to smash it over his father’s head.
Fortunately, a neighbor called the police in time, preventing a tragedy from occurring. After this incident, Wang Yong completely lost face in the community. He began openly stealing bicycles in the neighborhood and extorting “protection fees” from local vendors.
“Wang Mingyan’s son is causing trouble again!”
“Stay away from him; that guy is a complete lunatic!”
“I really feel sorry for those old folks; they raised such an ungrateful wretch!”
But no one dared to confront Wang Yong directly because everyone feared his violent outbursts when drunk.
