Before night fell that day, Mu Qing hurriedly took her leave after sending them back to Liang Qingsong's home, claiming she had matters to attend to.
Liang Qingsong arranged for the four of them to have dinner in the main hall. After a long day of traveling back and forth to Baisha Village, they were exhausted and retired to their rooms early to rest.
As the moon reached its zenith, Liang Qingsong's courtyard was enveloped in silence. The only sound was the occasional rustle of leaves blown down by the Mountain Wind.
In a state between sleep and wakefulness, Shen Tong suddenly felt a sharp pain in her right eye! She jolted awake, sensing an overwhelming aura of killing intent approaching from the darkness.
Shen Tong quickly put on her outer garment and quietly got up. She pushed open a small crack in the wooden window to look outside. The night breeze swept in, and the waterlogged stone slabs in the courtyard glimmered faintly under the moonlight.
At that moment, an unusual sound of wind mixed with faint footsteps came from outside the courtyard. Shen Tong's heart raced; she quickly slipped out of her room and knocked softly on the doors of the others nearby.
Lin Mingchang and Fang Zigui heard the knocking and promptly opened their doors simultaneously. Being the most alert among them, they had been sleeping lightly.
Almost at the same instant, several dark figures suddenly leaped onto the courtyard wall. These shadows surged into the courtyard like phantoms, wielding strange short knives etched with Dongba Runes.
The leader among them coldly declared, "We have found the one with the Contract Eye!" His voice carried an eerie echo, as if another voice was speaking from within him.
At that moment, Liang Qingsong rushed out from his room wearing a long robe, holding an oil lamp in his hand. "Who are you?! Why are you trespassing in my home?"
Before he could finish speaking, one of the black-clad figures lunged at Liang Qingsong, aiming the short knife directly at his heart. The lamp flickered, casting shadows that danced wildly.
Lin Mingchang sprang forward in a flash, grabbing the assailant's wrist and forcing it downward while driving his knee into the man's abdomen. The black-clad figure let out a muffled groan and staggered back, knocking over a flowerpot in the courtyard.
"Mr. Liang, step back!" Lin Mingchang shouted as he positioned himself protectively in front of Shen Tong. He turned to glare at the other black-clad figures and demanded fiercely, "What do you want?"
The man in black did not respond, instead closing in together. Their movements were eerie, almost soundless, as if they were treading on air.
Seeing this, Lin Mingchang shifted his neck from side to side and assumed a fighting stance. Since leaving the Police Station, his skills had sharpened significantly; free from the constraints of rules, his strikes had become increasingly ruthless.
“Xiaoshuang, stay back!” Fang Zigui shouted before charging directly at the men in black.
Under the faint moonlight, a fierce battle erupted suddenly. Two men in black lunged at Lin Mingchang with knives, but he nimbly dodged their attacks.
With a swift turn, Lin Mingchang’s right fist struck like a cannonball, hitting one of them squarely in the chest. The man let out a muffled groan and crashed into a stone table in the courtyard.
The other man slashed down with his knife, but Lin Mingchang sidestepped once more and delivered a knife-hand strike to the side of his opponent's neck. The man fell to the ground with a thud, his short knife sliding several meters away.
Meanwhile, three other men in black circled around the entangled Lin Mingchang and lunged toward Shen Tong, who was standing under the corridor. One held a rope while the other two wielded knives; it was clear their objective was to capture Shen Tong.
Seeing that Shen Tong might be in danger, Fang Zigui swiftly darted in from the side. He raised his arm slightly; though his movement appeared gentle, it concealed great strength. As he redirected the momentum of one of the attackers, the man suddenly lost control and collided with another, sending both tumbling into a heap.
