Taking the elevator, we quickly arrived at the top floor, which had the typical layout of an office building. Amidst the curious gazes of the staff, Lo Xinyu led us to a solid wooden door, took out a key, and unlocked it.
Inside was a luxurious office. However, since it was meant for decision-makers, there weren't many complicated office devices; instead, all the household appliances like air conditioning were present. On the desk sat only an Apple computer and a telephone, simple yet resembling a piece of art.
The only window was located behind the desk chair, allowing for ample natural light. Lo Xinyu walked over to the desk and pointed to the surface between the computer and the phone, saying, “The project proposal was placed right here yesterday.”
I approached the desk, but of course, there was no trace of the proposal left. A gentle breeze from the air conditioner brushed against my hair, and I couldn't help but marvel at how much better this environment was compared to our magazine office.
Yang Fan observed the arrangement on the desk and asked, “Has anything changed in your office since the proposal went missing?”
Without hesitation, Lo Xinyu replied, “For some reason, both my air conditioner and computer broke down that day. There were many important files on the computer; perhaps because they were password-protected, the other party couldn't simply copy them. Instead, they used some method to destroy the drives and hard disk, aiming to prevent us from drafting a new proposal before the bidding— and that indeed happened.”
“What about the air conditioner?” I inquired.
“It was replaced,” Lo Xinyu casually remarked. I turned to glance at the brand-new air conditioner nearby; it looked powerful and clearly expensive.
“Who is your rival company?” Yang Fan seemed to have not noticed any significant clues and turned to ask Lo Xinyu.
Lo Xinyu gestured downward and said, “Xinlan Real Estate, located on the ground floor of this building.” He sat down in a leather chair behind the desk and continued, “Xinlan is our biggest competitor in real estate. Losing this bid was more about losing face. So I hope you can find evidence of them stealing our proposal so that we can sue them and overturn this situation.”
Yang Fan nodded and said, “The priority now is to figure out how they stole the proposal. You should have surveillance footage from that night, right?”
“Yes, I've watched it many times already but didn't find anything unusual,” Lo Xinyu said as he opened the computer on his desk; the bitten Apple logo emitted a warm beige glow.
I moved closer to Yang Fan as Lo Xinyu opened a video file. The image was clear, divided into three sections, all showing a staircase.
"This is the three flights of stairs you must pass to reach the top floor. I was the last to leave that night, so it couldn't have been one of my employees," Lo Xinyu explained, fast-forwarding the video to thirty-two times its normal speed.
"What about the elevator footage?" I couldn't help but ask, since we had just taken the elevator up.
"The elevator shut down at ten o'clock that night and remained on the ground floor."
The footage on the computer was almost static, with only the subtitles at the bottom indicating that time was still passing. Just as I began to lose interest, Lo Xinyu appeared on screen, moving up the stairs like a rocket.
"You started work this early?" I turned to look at the unusually calm Lo Xinyu beside me.
Lo Xinyu replied briefly, "I just took office; I need to lead by example." There was a hint of determination in his eyes.
The video provided no useful information other than confirming that no one had gone upstairs via the staircase that night. After watching the footage, Yang Fan frowned slightly.
"Any findings?" Lo Xinyu asked Yang Fan, his gaze filled with anticipation.
Yang Fan shook his head and said, "Send me the detailed information on Xinlan Company." Without hesitation, Lo Xinyu made a call for his secretary to bring it over.
However, I did not participate in the subsequent investigation. Glancing at my watch, I realized it was already time for Sister Yin and Xiao Shi's deadline.
