Zhongyang Hospital is one of the top comprehensive hospitals in the country. Not only does it have branches in various cities, but it has also recently collaborated with Tohoku University Hospital on brain surgery research, achieving significant progress.
The hospital was originally founded by Kenichi Asada and has been passed down through the family. Okamoto's wife, Asada Yukiho, is the only daughter of the current director.
It cannot be denied that when Okamoto married Yukiho, he had the thought of mutual commercial benefit between their families in mind, as the pharmaceutical and medical equipment market is almost monopolized by the Asada family.
However, Okamoto was well aware that this junior of his, who was three years his junior, possessed a unique charm that captivated his heart.
At the beginning of their marriage, Okamoto often secretly rejoiced at having married such an outstanding and beautiful woman. But as time passed, he began to feel a sense of aversion towards Yukiho. It wasn’t that Yukiho did anything wrong; rather, she was simply too capable.
Whether it was household chores, financial management, or work, she excelled in all areas, even surpassing him. He started to realize why he had felt an underlying unease during their early relationship—a kind of invisible distance that he could never bridge no matter how hard he tried.
Gradually, he invested less in their relationship. After Yamaguchi Haruna appeared, he no longer felt any desire to possess Yukiho. Haruna worked in the same department as Yukiho; she was a senior to Yukiho in college and was only a year younger than Okamoto.
During university, Okamoto had interacted with Haruna a few times and had a good impression of this delicate girl. Unexpectedly, this connection could only bloom quietly in the shadows.
Everything seemed to be running on a visible track for Okamoto until he never expected things would evolve into their current state.
In early December, Haruna was found dead at the under-construction Kamihon Park, having been stabbed in the heart with a sharp weapon—dying instantly.
Upon hearing this news, Okamoto felt as if all the strength had been drained from his body; he felt torn apart. However, misfortune did not end there. In mid-December, as he was gradually recovering from the shock, his wife Yukiho was also attacked in her company building. It was almost confirmed to be the same perpetrator; she too was stabbed but fortunately avoided any fatal injuries and survived.

Chiyoda Station was particularly crowded with people getting off. From here, taking the No. 3 express line would lead to the bustling city center. Along the station line were several small shops selling tea soup. Perhaps due to this winter being especially cold, these hot drinks were quite popular; steam rose from simple wooden stalls while a light tea fragrance attracted many passersby to stop and linger.
Haruna carried the local specialties she had brought back from her hometown and ordered a cup of black tea from the owner. She wore a white double-breasted coat, her nose slightly reddened from the cold.
Finding a long bench, Haruna sat down, peeled back the plastic lid, and took a sip of tea. Her nearly frozen body slowly began to relax.
Every year, Magazine Hui Ri Dong Planning granted its full-time employees fifteen days of vacation. In the past, Haruna would take advantage of the summer to travel to nearby towns with friends.
This summer, however, the company was involved in a project at West Street Building Coffee Cinema. Due to intense competition, all departments hoped that employees could postpone their vacations until after summer. Haruna's Advertising Department was no exception, scheduling all holidays for after September.
At the end of October, Haruna requested an extended leave from the company. She decided to return to her hometown, Lian Ben, and visit the local shrine while she was there. As her tea neared its end, Haruna felt a heaviness in her heart at the thought of her vacation coming to an end and returning to work the next day.
She pulled out her phone from her beige leather bag and scrolled through her contacts. When the cursor landed on Naoki Okamoto's name, she hesitated for a moment before pressing the call button.
