Shen Tong immediately identified the key words and asked, "What is the Lunar Eclipse Ritual?"
The man in black turned to look at Shen Tong, a strange glint flashing in his eyes. "It can only be... activated on the night of the Eclipse...”
Before he could finish his sentence, his expression suddenly changed drastically. Veins bulged on his forehead as he let out a scream that was far from human.
Black froth gushed from his mouth, his eyes rolled back, and after a few violent convulsions, he fell still.
"What happened?" Liang Qingsong exclaimed, stepping back several paces while supporting the old servant beside him.
Fang Zigui hurried forward to check. He pried open the man in black's eyelids, examined his tongue and nails.
"He’s dead, poisoned," Fang Zigui stood up and said. "From the symptoms, it appears he had been poisoned with a slow-acting toxin long ago. This type of toxin doesn’t take effect immediately but will cause death at a specific time after being ingested."
Lin Mingchang dropped his short knife and shook his head. "It seems these men in black were part of a suicide squad. The Gui Xu Society is truly ruthless..."
Liang Qingsong's face turned pale as he pondered for a moment before suddenly recalling something.
"Since the Gui Xu Society has found me here and failed in their attempt, they will definitely send more people. This house is no longer safe; we must move immediately."
Lin Mingchang agreed wholeheartedly and quickly arranged for everyone to pack their belongings. Under the cover of night, they hurriedly left Liang's residence.
In the deep night of Lijiang Ancient Town, there was not a single light; the narrow stone alleys were illuminated only by faint moonlight.
The group carefully followed Liang Qingsong as they navigated through the winding paths.
"Mr. Liang, where are we going?" Lin Mingchang whispered.
"To Mu Qing's house," Liang Qingsong replied quietly. "His place is outside the city, not far from here."
They passed through several intricate alleys and arrived at a simple settlement outside the city.
This area was filled with traditional Naxi wooden stilt houses that looked almost identical.
Liang Qingsong skillfully found a Brick-and-Tile Cottage and gently knocked on the wooden door.
After a moment, footsteps could be heard from inside.
Mu Qing asked warily through the door, "Who is it?"
"It’s me, Liang Qingsong."
With a creak, the wooden door opened, revealing Mu Qing wrapped in a thick coat, looking puzzled as he stood at the entrance.
His surprise deepened when he saw that Liang Qingsong was accompanied by four others.
"Mr. Liang? And... everyone, is there something urgent at this late hour?"
Liang Qingsong glanced around cautiously. "The situation is critical; let's discuss it inside."
Mu Qing immediately understood and stepped aside. "Please come in quickly."
Mu Qing's home was not spacious, consisting of only two simple rooms adorned with a few Dongba Idol paintings on the walls.
"Make yourselves comfortable, don't stand on ceremony," Mu Qing invited as he busied himself lighting the stove. "I live alone, and my place is modest; I hope you don't mind."
The group gathered around the stove while Mu Qing hurriedly prepared tea for them.
Feeling somewhat apologetic, Liang Qingsong said, "The Gui Xu Society just came looking for me. My home is no longer safe, so I had no choice but to bring them here for a while. I'm sorry for the trouble, Mu Qing."
"Mr. Liang, there's no need to be so polite with me," Mu Qing replied with a smile, adding more firewood to the stove.
Mu Qing retrieved several wooden bowls from the cupboard and poured hot tea for everyone.
As they held the warm bowls and took a few sips, the steaming tea chased away some of the chill in the air and helped ease the tension that had gripped them.
