"We're of average height, not too tall and not too short, but all three of us are quite agile. How about we call ourselves the 'Gale Squad'?" A Fei suggested. "But Light Speed is much faster than wind speed; we might as well call ourselves the 'Light of the Son Team,'" I replied. Jiang Lingfeng chuckled after hearing this, "Those names are too common. I think we're all striving for the same dream, so let's call ourselves the 'Dream Chasers Team.'" "Ling Feng Senior's idea is special, but it seems a bit dull..." A Fei pondered. Suddenly, I slapped my forehead and exclaimed, "Then let's just call it 'Dream Chasers'!" "Great! Let's go with 'Dream Chasers'!" Jiang Lingfeng and A Fei said in unison. "Now I declare the establishment of the 'Dream Chaser Boys Streetball Team!'" I pretended to be serious, and the three of us burst into laughter.
Before we knew it, it was the second day. Sha Xiaomei and Xia Ying also came to cheer us on. After arriving at Lijing Park, we discovered that the registration booth had been dismantled and replaced with an entrance area. It turned out that there was only one registration time, and later we learned from the organizer that there wasn't unlimited registration; only the first sixty-four teams were registered. We pulled out our sign that read 'No. 59'—what luck! Looking around, we saw that four temporary street basketball courts had been set up in the park to prevent interference between games, meaning eight teams would compete simultaneously. Once we got there, we showed our number tags and student IDs: "We are the 'Dream Chasers' team!"
After the first round of draws, we found out that our match was scheduled for tomorrow, which was the second competition day, against the Wolf Fang Team. The five of us went to watch a match at one of the courts when suddenly my phone rang—it was Shuai Dong calling. "Hey, Dead Jack! Where are you? It's been two days without a word from you guys; I thought you both had kicked the bucket! Got girlfriends and forgot your buddies, huh? That's just blatant favoritism!" Shuai Dong yelled as soon as he answered. I quickly tried to calm him down: "Don't get worked up; it's bad for your health. We registered for the Street Basketball Championship with Ling Feng Senior and are currently watching a game in the park." "What! When did you register?" Pang Hao took over the phone and asked. "Just earlier today, but our match is scheduled for tomorrow. You should come too," I told him. "Not going; I'll go tomorrow instead. I'm still playing F with Pang Hao," he replied before hanging up. Shuai Dong grabbed the phone back and hung up on me again.
We continued watching the game between the Iron Plate Squid Team and Firefish Team. Wow! It was either squid or grilled fish—definitely two foodies competing against each other. The process of their "Double Fish Showdown" was intense, but Firefish Team clearly had stronger skills than Iron Plate Squid Team, dominating throughout the match and ultimately eliminating Iron Plate Squid Team to advance to the semifinals. From this match, we realized how different street basketball is from regular basketball in terms of rules and appeal.
We specifically bought a book about street basketball rules to study before our turn came up. There are many differences between street basketball and regular basketball; for example, preliminary matches only last ten minutes, shot clocks are set to twenty seconds, only captains have speaking rights, etc. We practiced hard together from around two until after five in the afternoon. Luckily, it was cloudy with a slight breeze; otherwise, we would have definitely suffered from heatstroke. Through practicing against Jiang Lingfeng, I discovered that his seasoned experience is a huge asset for our team, along with A Fei's physical fitness and my explosiveness—our "Three Musketeers" are simply a perfect match! Our average height isn't very tall, but that's not an issue since this isn't a formal five-on-five match. I noticed that both Firefish Team and Iron Plate Squid Team weren't particularly tall either; Firefish even had a 17-year-old short player who still managed to win games. Our average height exceeds 1.8 meters—so we're not worried!
After getting home that evening, I put on my headphones and listened to a song I've been particularly fond of lately: Liu Jia's duet with Sara titled "Love Is Beautiful." When I first heard it, I thought Liu Jia was a girl; however, later I found out that he wrote all the songs for this track as well as "Come and Watch the Meteor Shower." I really admire this mainland music creator now! Listening to the song suddenly reminded me of Xia Ying. I opened QQ but saw she wasn't online so I sent her a message: "Cookie, Pig Head misses you—get online quickly!" Hehe, pretty cheesy right? Not long after, Xia Ying replied on QQ: "I'm here! You were quite pushy." It worked like a charm! Now chatting with Xia Ying feels distinctly different; previously it felt mysterious but now it's sweet and warm—definitely an upgrade!
On the second day, we officially began our journey in the Street Basketball Championship. After arriving at Lijing Park, the organizers handed each of us two sets of jerseys printed with 'Boiling Sports' logos—one black and one white. We were assigned to play at court number three. Upon arriving at court three, we saw a referee and three guys wearing black jerseys warming up. The staff guided us to a makeshift locker room to change clothes. After changing into our designated white jerseys, we walked over; upon seeing us arrive, the referee reset the scoreboard to zero and instructed staff to set the timer for twelve minutes. "You must be the Dream Chaser Boys Streetball Team?" asked one of the guys in black jerseys who had facial hair tied back like A Fei's height-wise. "Yes, we're Dream Chasers; you must be Wolf Fang Team!" Jiang Lingfeng replied.
"How old are you? What's your name?" he continued asking.
"Hey, are you taking a census or something..." I couldn't stand his tone anymore and shouted back at him.
"Jack! Don't be impulsive!" A Fei stopped me.
"We're all high school students; I'm Yu Chengfei; this is our senior Jiang Lingfeng; this is Xiang Jie," A Fei calmly introduced us.
"Ha ha ha! So it's just a bunch of kids!" he laughed.
"Kids remember this: my name is Cui Hengyang; those two brothers over there—left one is Yuxin and right one is Luo Yulong—we're all twenty-one," Cui Hengyang said.
"So what if you're older..." I started getting agitated again.
"Jack! If there's any conflict now we'll be disqualified from competing; let's beat them on court instead," Jiang Lingfeng whispered in my ear.
I stepped back and nodded slightly while holding back my frustration—hmph! I'll see just how sharp your Wolf Fang really is!
After completing pre-match preparations, with a whistle from the referee signaling the start of play today’s weather was quite pleasant—not too hot with cloudy skies."
