Early in the morning on the twenty-first, I was awakened by A Fei's phone call. I glanced at the clock and saw it was only six o'clock, so I involuntarily fell back asleep. "Jie! Get up! A Fei is here!" My mom's voice came from outside as she knocked on the door. "I know! Why are you blocking my door?" I grumbled, reluctantly getting out of bed. After getting up, I excitedly sent a text message to Xia Ying that simply read: "Going to battle!" When A Fei arrived at the entrance of Lijing Garden, Jiang Lingfeng was already there early.
"A Fei, Jie!" Just as we were about to enter, we suddenly heard a shout. Turning around, we saw Sha Xiaomei and Xia Ying running towards us. "A Fei, how did you two get here?" A Fei asked as he walked over. "We came to cheer you on! This morning, Yingying called me and said you were competing, so we decided to come together!" Sha Xiaomei replied. I curiously approached Xia Ying: "Cookie, how did you know we were competing today?" After a sigh, Xia Ying proudly said, "Well, it was your 'going to battle' message that gave it away. What can I say? I'm just naturally clever." "Hmph! So self-absorbed," I pretended to mock her. Xia Ying stuck out her tongue and fell silent, but I had to admit that this girl was quite sharp.
After entering the waiting area of the park, we began the random draw for matches. We waited among the crowd for the final announcement. Looking around, I noticed that almost all thirty-one teams had arrived. Suddenly, amidst a group of strangers, I spotted familiar faces: Zhao Ziyang, Sun Yi, Li Dongdong, and Liang Yuhao. It turned out they were also participating in this year's event. A Fei seemed to have noticed them too and kept glancing in their direction. "Zhao Ziyang from Sangyue High School!” Jiang Lingfeng exclaimed as he walked over to them, and we followed closely behind. “Ziyang, Sun Yi! You guys are here for the catch ball competition too?!” Jiang Lingfeng shouted when he reached them. “Oh, it’s Lingfeng! Yeah, didn’t expect to see you here. Hey? Aren't these two members of the Team from Yulin High School? How did you end up together?” Zhao Ziyang noticed us. “Oh, we ran into each other at the registration desk and decided to play together,” explained Jiang Lingfeng. It turned out these two members of 'The Five Great Point Guards of the City' knew each other well.
Looking at A Fei, Zhao Ziyang said: “You must be Yu Chengfei, right? I've heard you're a 'future star athlete' from junior high school.” A Fei humbly replied: “Yes, I'm Yu Chengfei. Hello again, Senior Ziyang.” “And this must be the one who once made a game-winning block against Twenty-Four Middle School, right? Xiang Jie?” Zhao Ziyang turned to me and asked. “No way! Senior Ziyang and Senior Lingfeng are both part of the city's 'Five Great Point Guards'. We're just amateurs compared to them!” I joked. “So you guys came here too! You made us search for you everywhere!” Just then, Xia Ying and Sha Xiaomei ran over, and suddenly their attention was drawn irresistibly to Zhao Ziyang.
After laughing for a while, we returned to our original waiting area. “Did you notice how handsome that Zhao Ziyang is…” Xia Ying said dreamily. “Yeah, I noticed too; he's tall and handsome,” quickly replied Sha Xiaomei. “Oh! You two are crushing on him! Should I and A Fei help you get his phone number and QQ ID?” I teased with jealousy as Jiang Lingfeng covered his mouth and chuckled at our banter. “Look at you getting all worked up! It's just admiration for his looks—like appreciating a flower or a painting; it's not like we're actually interested in him or anything,” explained Xia Ying. “Exactly! Even if he is good-looking, me and Xia Ying are still your girls,” added Sha Xiaomei, quickly agreeing with her friend while I felt pleased by their reassurances.
After what felt like an eternity of waiting, the second round draw for the 'Streetball Championship North China Division' finally arrived. We would compete against the Youlong Team for a spot in the top sixteen of the main event. It turned out that the name of their team was 'Feather Soul', which sounded quite mysterious. They would face off against the Firefish Team in this round; I wondered if we would meet them later on? If so, it would be an exciting showdown. As for the strength of the Youlong Team, judging by their height and physique alone, we seemed slightly superior; however, since they made it past the first round into this one, they must possess unique skills as well. Whether our path to the top sixteen would be smooth remained uncertain; nonetheless, we had no reason to fear anyone—we just needed to focus on playing our best game!
Our match was scheduled for tomorrow morning while Zhao Ziyang’s team would compete this afternoon. After grabbing a quick bite for lunch, we hurried back to Lijing Park. Upon arriving at the park entrance, Xia Ying and Sha Xiaomei wandered off aimlessly while the three of us sat by court number one watching matches unfold. Since all four members of team 'Team' trained together regularly, their chemistry was impressive; however, the speed and agility of the players from the Firefish Team, despite their shorter stature, were remarkable as they darted between their opponents like fish swimming in a river. Ultimately though, the overall strength of team 'Yuhun Team' prevailed as they narrowly defeated the Firefish Team, securing their place in the top sixteen.
On our way back, we discussed team 'Yuhun Team'’s strategies and weaknesses of team 'Firefish Team', aiming to learn from them as we prepared for our own matches in hopes of reaching the finals in the 'North China Region. Although that goal felt somewhat distant right now. Before long, Xia Ying and Sha Xiaomei returned with popsicles in hand. “Where have you two been? Your hair is all messy!” remarked A Fei, playfully brushing back some hair from where he had tossed it forward earlier. I cleared my throat deliberately as if signaling them to tone it down in public; upon hearing my cough, he quickly withdrew his hand with an awkward laugh. These two always flaunted their sweetness so openly—it was unbearable sometimes! I turned my head to look at my own girl,Cookie, who was smiling gently as she watched every move of both A Fei and Sha Xiaomei; "Cookie, I'll always be here with you."
