"Last night you went on a date with Ya to the park, right?" Shuai Dong said with a sneer. I was taken aback; how did Shuai Dong know that I had gone to the park with Ya last night? "Shuai Dong, are you stalking me?!" I suddenly realized. "If I weren't stalking you, I wouldn't believe you're such a jerk!" Shuai Dong continued to smirk. I calmed down and smiled at him, "So what did you see between us? Did I even touch her?" This left Shuai Dong speechless. "Then... why did you go out to meet her at night?" Shuai Dong's confidence clearly faltered. I replied casually, "She thanked me for helping her out last night, that's all." "Then why did you have to go at night?" Shuai Dong was still not giving up. This made me laugh, "Dong Ge, she has to work during the day; didn't you see she only went out at eight-thirty?"
Shuai Dong's doubts were dispelled, and he grinned as he put his arm around my shoulder, "Hey, you're early." This guy's mood changes so quickly. After we all got up and had breakfast, Jiang Lingfeng said, "The group matches are all over; let's go to Kuda Square and see who our semifinal opponent is. This mystery has been bothering me for a long time." We headed towards Kuda Square and suddenly spotted two familiar figures ahead—Song Huajing and Lu Lei! What a coincidence! I didn't expect to run into them here. "Thunderous Duo!" I shouted as I ran over. A Fei and the others also saw Thunderbolt. The two of them turned around and smiled in surprise when they saw us: "Jie A Fei, how come you're here?"
"We came to Beijing Happy Valley for some fun," Lu Lei replied. "You guys too?..." Jiang Lingfeng exclaimed, recognizing him. "Is that you, Jiang Lingfeng?" Song Huajing asked. Jiang Lingfeng smiled back at him, "Yes, Thunderbolt, hello." "How come you guys are hanging out together?" Lu Lei asked us in confusion. "Oh... it's a long story. By the way, do you know about the National Street Basketball Championship? The semifinals will be held at Kuda Square tomorrow; let's go check out the matchups." I felt a bit embarrassed revealing that we were participating in the competition.
"Yeah, we were just thinking of going to see it too; later we found out that our Cangzhou is also one of the North China Region's qualifying zones," Lu Lei said as we walked along.
I figured there was no need to hide anything anymore and asked Lu Lei, "Do you know who the champion of Cangzhou is?" Song Huajing chimed in, "I heard it's a team called Dream Chasers, and they don't seem very old..." Shuai Dong interjected, "Do you know who the members of Dream Chasers are?" He looked at us oddly afterward. Song Huajing and Lu Lei both shook their heads in unison: "I don't know that."
"Haha, I know!" Shuai Dong continued to act mysterious. A Fei patted Shuai Dong on the shoulder: "Alright Shuai Dong, stop teasing the seniors. Thunderbolt seniors, we are the Dream Chasers Team."
"What?!" Song Huajing and Lu Lei's mouths dropped open simultaneously. I laughed and mimicked lines from martial arts films: "I'm ashamed; yes, the three of us are indeed the city champions." Thunderbolt slowly closed their mouths. Lu Lei sighed: "No wonder! With one of the Five Great Point Guards, Jiang Lingfeng leading and two super rookies like Junior High School VP Yu Chengfei and talented player Xiang Jie on your team, it's no surprise you won the city championship; you've really brought glory to us high school students! By the way, how is North China's record now?" Lu Lei asked with concern.
I shyly scratched my head: "Well... we entered the semifinals with an undefeated record in group matches... Ouch!" Who knew I'd accidentally hit my head where it hurt? It made me yelp in pain. "Really?!" Song Huajing and Lu Lei exclaimed simultaneously, their faces filled with envy.
After we arrived at Kuda Square, the venue staff was busy preparing for the semifinals. I saw signs saying 'North China Semifinals' posted on both sides of the court. We checked out the bracket on the notice board at the back of the court for this North China Finals; it had already been posted for the top four matchups. As expected, Snow Wolf topped their group with a perfect record of three wins; our semifinal opponent will be P Team while our provincial brothers Light Speed Team will face off against Snow Wolf who is currently on fire. Given this situation, Light Speed Team seems to be in serious trouble; even if we get past P Team, we might very well face Snow Wolf in the championship battle. Sigh! It looks like encountering Snow Wolf in this series has become inevitable; we can only pray that Light Speed Team can pull off an upset—but first... we need to defeat Snow Wolf to reach the finals.
"P Team won't be easy either..." Jiang Lingfeng remarked as he looked at the bracket. "Come on, Ling Feng Senior! We've come this far; there's nothing to fear! Even our top three teams have been defeated by us; what else should we be afraid of? P Team's strength should be about equal to Light Speed Team's so our chances should be fifty-fifty—no! We're first in our group; our chances should be greater," I confidently analyzed.
"Is Snow Wolf Team really strong?" Song Huajing asked.
"Yeah, we've seen their opening match against P Team—a strong matchup—but Snow Wolf came out on top in the end. Their heights are staggered: their tallest player is 1.9 meters tall while their lineup is similar to ours with three players just over 1.8 meters," A Fei added.
Song Huajing smiled: "It's alright; you've made it through your group matches already; tomorrow we'll go cheer for you live."
That evening we all actively prepared for tomorrow's semifinals. The three of us gathered for an impromptu strategy meeting; Jiang Lingfeng and A Fei would find it somewhat challenging defending against Snow Wolf's center so I'd need to cover him when necessary... We discussed from after dinner until eight o'clock. After finishing our meeting, I lay on my bed and suddenly remembered that Xia Ying and I had been in a cold war for two days now. I called her and after more than twenty rings she finally picked up.
"What do you want?! Haven't you been bothering me enough?! Why are you calling me again?!" Xia Ying answered coldly once she picked up.
"Cookie don't be mad! Soda knows he was wrong; I'll never throw your phone again..." I said in a particularly pitiful voice.
Xia Ying fell silent for five seconds before suddenly bursting into laughter: "Haha! Knowing your mistakes makes you a good kid; I'll forgive you this time! You dead Soda haven't contacted me for an entire day—I hate you!" It turned out Xia Ying wasn't hard-hearted but was waiting for me to coax her back; if I'd known earlier I'd have kept calling until she picked up yesterday! I understood now that girls' feelings are actually quite delicate; their stubbornness is just a way of wanting their boyfriends to comfort them and protect them.
