Xia Ying rushed over and hugged me. I held Xia Ying and said, “Cookie, I missed you so much!” Xia Ying pressed her head tightly against my shoulder and nodded, “Mm mm, I missed you too!” After I let go of her, I took out the watch from behind me and said, “Here’s a gift for you. Whenever you check the time, remember me every minute and every second.” I raised my left wrist with a smile, “Of course, I will too. We each have one, hehe.”
“Wow! It’s so beautiful! I didn’t expect you to still think of me!” Xia Ying exclaimed excitedly as she took it out and put it on her right wrist. Then she took my left hand with her right hand and said, “Couple watches, we’ll never be apart, hehe.” She even stuck out her tongue playfully, looking adorable.
Suddenly, Xia Ying looked gently into my eyes. I felt particularly guilty towards Xia Ying, so I avoided her gaze. Xia Ying wrapped her arms around my neck and slowly stood on her tiptoes to bring her face closer to mine. When her lips were just five centimeters away from mine, I felt really guilty. “Cookie, I have something to tell you.” I interrupted her movement. Xia Ying immediately stopped leaning in and slowly lowered her feet back down. “Fine! Hmph! Can’t you wait a little longer…” Xia Ying pouted in complaint.
“Hey, Cookie, is your first kiss still intact?” I asked nervously. “What do you mean? Are you doubting my character? Hmph! It was almost gone just now!” Xia Ying replied angrily. I lowered my head and calmly confessed, “I don’t have mine anymore…”
“What!” Xia Ying widened her eyes in shock after hearing this. “Aren’t you supposed to be my first love? How could your first kiss be gone?” I continued, “You are my first love, but I gave my first kiss to another girl last night…” After saying this, I felt much more relaxed.
With a loud slap, Xia Ying hit me hard across the face. My left cheek burned with pain. “Xiang Jie, you’re such a jerk! You’ve betrayed my feelings!” Tears welled up in Xia Ying’s eyes as she glared at me. “Yingying, listen to me explain; you are my girlfriend! I…”
“I don’t want to hear it! Let me tell you officially that we are breaking up!” Xia Ying interrupted me and turned to leave. As she turned away, I saw tears spilling from her eyes. I tried to grab her hand but she shook it off. Watching her walk away, I shouted after her, “Yingying, I’m sorry!” I had lost everything; this was all my fault.
I walked home in a daze. “Jie, you’re back! Just in time for dinner; did you plan your return well?” My mom joked while cooking. My dad was carefully polishing our North China Champion trophy with a new cloth. I didn’t say anything and went straight to my room. Lying on my bed with my eyes closed, the images of Yingying and Xia Ying kept floating before me. If only I hadn’t gone to Beijing; if only we hadn’t won the championship; none of this would have happened. Now, I had said goodbye to Yingying, lost Xia Ying, and once again found myself all alone.
In the afternoon, I called A Fei out to accompany me on a hike. Under the blazing sun, I ran tirelessly along the mountain path while A Fei, wearing a sun hat, followed behind panting heavily. When we reached the top of the mountain, I collapsed onto the pavilion at the center of the peak. Sitting there staring blankly at the ground for about five minutes, I heard A Fei’s footsteps approaching.
“Jie, I really suspect you’re on steroids; once you start running, you don’t stop! You’re killing me here; I'm about to get heatstroke!” A Fei flopped down onto the bench in the pavilion.
“A Fei, I broke up with Xia Ying…” I whispered softly. “Huh?” A Fei sat up abruptly. “Jie, you’re not joking are you? What happened?” His eyes were filled with disbelief as he looked at me. I nodded, “Yeah, it’s true; I'm such a jerk for being greedy and looking at other girls while having what’s in front of me; this is what I deserve.”
I closed my eyes as A Fei quickly moved closer and sat beside me. “Jie, did you cheat?” he asked me directly. I didn’t respond. He slapped my shoulder hard and said angrily, “Jie, how could you do this? Xia Ying is such a good girl! What kind of girl are you looking for? Tell me who it was!”
His emotions were rising too; not wanting to reveal that it was about Yingying, I remained silent as he pressed on with his questioning until he suddenly thought of something that calmed him down significantly as he sat back down again. “It’s Wang Yaqian, right?” he asked softly while staring at the ground.
“No! It’s not Wang Yaqian!” I quickly refuted him; I couldn’t give up on Yingying. “You don’t need to hide anything from me; we’re closer than brothers,” he said as he turned to look at me. Opening my mouth but hesitating to speak made me realize that yes, A Fei is my closest brother; there are things in my heart that should be shared with him.
“A Fei, I like both Xia Ying and Yingying. However, ever since leaving Beijing, I've told myself that from now on my heart only has room for Xia Ying, while Yingying is just a passerby.” I told him this honestly.
“Then when we go to Shanghai next time are you going to fall for another girl there?” he asked with a bitter smile.
“No! I'm not going to fall for any other girl!” I declared firmly.
“Then do you want to wholeheartedly pursue Wang Yaqian or try to win back Xia Ying?” he asked me again. This question truly left me unsure how to respond. Seeing my evasive and hesitant expression, he patted my shoulder gently: “Jie, think carefully about it; whatever decision you make, I'll support you. But once you've made your decision, don’t be unfaithful again! You’re just about to turn eighteen in five or six months; I hope these last few months before adulthood won’t bring any more emotional troubles.” Slowly turning my head to look at him, I nodded in understanding.
