Before entering the hotel, Xiong Sumei glanced at Jiang Chen. It was December, and the cold had already settled in domestically, not to mention the high plateau. Yet, Jiang Chen was only wearing a thin sports jacket. His silhouette was quite carefree, making it hard to tell that he was cold.
"This guy must really have something wrong with his head. He isn't even carrying a bag and is dressed like that. If he ends up sleeping outside, he might freeze to death," Xiong Sumei murmured.
"Qian Wenwu, Peng Cheng, Sun Rong, do any of you have an extra down jacket?" Xiong Sumei suddenly asked.
"What for?"
"That person is only wearing that little. If he can't find a hotel tonight, he'll probably freeze to death outside. I’ll give him a jacket; saving a life is worth more than building a pagoda," Xiong Sumei said.
"I don’t have any clothes."
"Me neither."
"Don’t look at me; I’m wearing my own clothes and won’t give him anything."
Xiong Sumei shot them a glare and then ran to her car to grab her spare down jacket. Although it was a women's jacket, it would still fit.
She caught up with Jiang Chen and said, "You really are something else. On such a cold day, aren't you afraid of freezing to death outside? It's unreasonable. Here, take this down jacket; don’t lose your life before you even reach the sacred mountain."
Before Jiang Chen could respond, Xiong Sumei handed him the jacket without waiting for an answer and quickly ran away.
"I'll return it to you tomorrow," Jiang Chen called after her while holding the jacket.
"No need," came Xiong Sumei's cool voice from the darkness.
Jiang Chen shook his head slightly, looking at the down jacket in his hands with a faint smile before storing it in his Storage Jade Gourd.
Although the temperature on the plateau would drop below zero at night, it had no effect on him. Since those rich second-generation kids were unwilling to stay in a hotel, Jiang Chen didn’t insist. Today presented them with two once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, but unfortunately, they had both missed out.
However, Xiong Sumei had surprised Jiang Chen twice now.
Walking through the small town, Jiang Chen soon reached a sheltered sandy area outside of it. There were at least a hundred tents set up on the sand, and some people were sitting around campfires warming themselves and chatting. The domestic tourists were few; most were Tibetan people.
Jiang Chen found a rock to sit on and gazed up at the starry sky. The stars on this plateau were different from those back home; they felt closer and shone brighter—truly a sky full of stars.
No wonder people often say that traveling to the Tibet Plateau is a cleansing of the soul; it certainly seemed true now.
"Youth, why not come over and warm yourself by the fire?" someone suddenly called out.
Jiang Chen looked up to see a group of Tibetan people about ten meters away watching him. An elder in a woolen robe with dark skin was looking at him kindly, inviting him over to warm himself by the fire.
"Sure, thank you." Jiang Chen accepted without hesitation; it was a good opportunity to learn more about the sacred mountain from them.
Jiang Chen approached the old man, who took out a grass mat and placed it beside him, gesturing for Jiang Chen to sit down.
The group of Tibetan people was warm and sincere, their gazes toward Jiang Chen filled with friendliness. He smiled slightly, acknowledging everyone before settling down cross-legged.
Next to the old man sat a small boy, around six or seven years old. The boy curled up beside the elder, the glow of the campfire casting a warm red light on his small face, which appeared rosy. However, the way the boy looked at Jiang Chen was shy yet tinged with fragility.
