We walked onto the court, and the second quarter began. After the opposing team made the inbound pass, Kobe took control of the ball to organize the offense. I really suspected that Kobe and Zhou Wenming were robots; they played over forty-five minutes every game, sometimes even the entire match—true iron men! Kobe dribbled the ball forward while I stepped up to defend. I watched his every intention and detail closely, not wanting to miss anything. After all, this guy in front of me was about my age, and in terms of organizational skills, I was no worse than him!
When he passed the ball back to Zhou Wenming, it was intercepted by A Fei. I quickly sprinted back to our half of the court as A Fei made a long pass directly to me. After receiving the ball, I drove straight to the basket. I felt Kobe was closing in behind me, so I had a sudden idea: instead of shooting quickly after jumping, I held onto the ball until just before landing. As I felt Kobe's arm reach out, I released the ball. My arm collided with Kobe's arm just as the referee blew the whistle; the ball swished through the net. It was a blocking foul on Kobe, and I would get an extra free throw—yes! Successfully scoring +1 against Kobe! I stepped up to the free-throw line, stared at the hoop for two seconds, then shot and made it! As I ran back to our half of the court, A Fei and Ouyang came over to high-five me. I glanced at Teacher Qiu, who looked very pleased.
After Thirteen Middle School made their inbound pass, Kobe charged straight toward the basket. The three of us positioned ourselves to defend. Kobe passed the ball back to a Shooting Guard outside the three-point line. Wei Weiwei rushed over but couldn't make it in time as the Shooting Guard took a shot from beyond the arc and scored! It seemed that under Coach Luo Qixing's strict guidance, Thirteen Middle School's other players had significantly improved their overall skills and ball-handling abilities. After Li Kanglin made an inbound pass, I brought the ball across half-court into our offensive zone. A Fei moved around on the right wing while Ouyang waited near the edge of the paint for a pass. I ran toward the right wing and bounced a pass to A Fei. A Fei received it and quickly passed it to Ouyang for an easy layup! Our Jade Unicorn Three Swordsmen executed this perfect play beautifully!
After receiving an inbound pass from Kobe, he passed it to the Shooting Guard again. The Shooting Guard made a mistake with a high throw from the right wing that went out of bounds, giving us another possession for free. After we inbounded, I made a long pass to Ouyang, who took a shot from beyond the three-point line but missed. Li Kanglin grabbed the rebound and passed it back to me. I caught it and shot another three-pointer—swish! At the start of this quarter, we had already scored an 8-0 run against Thirteen Middle School!
As we continued playing, we grew more confident while our opponents kept making mistakes. Coach Luo Qixing called two timeouts to set up strategies, but they didn't seem very effective. By halftime, we had turned things around and led Thirteen Middle School by six points with a score of 58-52, having outscored them 14-0 in that quarter. During halftime break, as we walked off the court, Teacher Qiu looked very pleased and gave us an approving nod. We entered the locker room where Teacher Qiu decided to keep our trio on for the second half. I felt grateful for Teacher Qiu's trust; this time we wouldn't lose!
After halftime ended, we walked back onto the court. Zhongqi Senior patted my shoulder and said, "Jie, believe in yourself." In that moment, I felt like I had inherited Zhongqi Senior's legacy; it was a magical connection between old and new Point Guards… The second half began with Li Kanglin passing me the ball as I crossed half-court to start organizing our offense. Tu Lei replaced Wei Weiwei; Tu Chuanfeng brought us new energy as I passed him the ball. He charged toward the basket attempting a dunk but was blocked by Zhou Wenming. A Fei grabbed the loose ball off the floor and scored with a hook shot again! We were on fire today; although Tu Chuanfeng’s dunk attempt failed, he looked excited—seems like that was just his warm-up.
In the third quarter, our opponents showed slight improvement; Kobe along with Shooting Guard and Zhou Wenming found success with their offensive plays. However, we still led 76-67 entering the final quarter by nine points. Teacher Qiu reminded us that only one quarter remained until we could secure first place in our group; given how things were going now, we had a great chance of taking down their home court after last season's regret of losing first place to Twenty-Four Middle School!
The decisive fourth quarter began with Teacher Qiu substituting me out for Zhongqi Senior while Zhang Jun replaced A Fei; only Ouyang remained on court from our trio of swordsmen. Teacher Qiu aimed to prevent any chance for them to adjust and wanted us to extend our lead further. However, Thirteen Middle School certainly wouldn’t surrender easily; early in this quarter they launched a furious counterattack starting with Kobe successfully faking a three-pointer under pressure followed by their Center seemingly awakening as he completed two alley-oops off Kobe’s brilliant passes along with Zhou Wenming’s mid-range jump shots… Within just four minutes into this quarter, Thirteen Middle School unleashed an incredible 14-4 scoring run that flipped their deficit into a lead against us! All our hard work from previous quarters vanished in an instant; with only two minutes left in regulation time we trailed 85-90.
Teacher Qiu quickly called for a timeout to adjust our strategy. "Why did Coach Luo Qixing suddenly make such effective substitutions for Thirteen Middle School in this fourth quarter?" I asked Teacher Qiu. He fell into deep thought before slowly responding: "I figured it out—the turning point of this game lies in Coach Luo’s recent substitution of their Center who hadn’t played during previous quarters but is clearly stronger than their starting Center. Coach Luo recognized that our team’s Yan Bing couldn’t play due to our weak inside presence so he sent out their starting Center late in this game; since our inside players were already exhausted physically they now have advantages both inside and outside!"
Teacher Qiu then pulled out his tactical board and instructed us on how to spread out and move effectively while we all listened attentively—none of us wanted to lose this game! Teacher Qiu substituted Wu Zhi Kai for Ouyang so now all three swordsmen were sitting on bench together; when Ouyang sat down A Fei and I high-fived him—Ouyang indeed looked tired but as I watched Tu Chuanfeng head onto court he still radiated energy without any sign of fatigue at all!
