Second Quarter The game has started, and we gradually walked back onto the court. Our lineup remained mostly unchanged, except that Tu Lei replaced Wei Weiwei. After entering the game, Hu Yue served, and Chu Yuetao took the ball straight to the front court, passing it to Hu Yue, who caught it and made a powerful dunk. It seems that Shi Er Zhong still wants to continue their fast-paced play! After we served, I passed the ball to Ouyang as I crossed midcourt, and Ouyang then passed it to A Fei. After holding the ball for a moment, A Fei passed it back to me. I took a shot from the top of the arc and scored. 94, our lead has been maintained.
After receiving the serve, Chu Yuetao suddenly slowed down the pace, moving slowly across midcourt while controlling the ball. I walked over to match up with him, and he unexpectedly passed the ball behind him to Jia Yu. Jia Yu jumped from the free-throw line and took a shot, but “bang!” Ouyang blocked it. After retrieving the ball, I rushed down for a fast break dunk. I rarely dunk during games, so this felt exhilarating. I remembered that when I used to bet with A Fei about dunking, I could never make it. But now, showing off my dunking skills felt as easy as drinking plain water. Have I grown taller?
Throughout the entire Second Quarter, we played at a slower pace than in the first quarter. Their teamwork was decent, but we seemed to have the upper hand. By halftime, we led them by 11 points with a score of 66-55. Chu Yuetao scored all 16 points for Shi Er Zhong in this quarter alone, making him the fifth player in league history to score over 15 points in a single quarter. The other four were: You Yong from Shi Yi Zhong, who scored 19 points in the fourth quarter of the finals during the 1999 season, helping his team achieve an incredible comeback; Lu Weizhe from Wu Jieyun High School, who scored all points in the first quarter against Chengnan High School during the 2000 season; Hu Zhenzhen from Experimental No. 1 High School, who scored 16 points in the fourth quarter of the semifinals against Hejiang Middle School; and Du Feilong from Experiment Three, who played a crucial role in their championship win.
As halftime arrived, both teams walked into the Locker Room. Teacher Qiu clapped his hands for us to sit down. “Chu Yuetao has strong individual skills, but our teamwork is even better. In the second half, their coach will definitely have Chu Yuetao focus more on assists and defense. If we can suppress Shi Er Zhong's counterattack momentum, we can basically secure our victory,” analyzed Teacher Qiu. Zhongqi Senior seemed lost in thought when Ouyang walked over and patted him on the shoulder, startling him.
“Zhongqi Senior, what are you thinking about?” Ouyang asked. Zhongqi Senior smiled: “Ouyang, you startled me! I was thinking about Chu Yuetao's playing style. His drive reminds me of two years ago when I saw Du Feilong play.” I felt a bit unconvinced by this and leaned closer to ask: “Zhongqi Senior, is it true that Du Feilong is exceptionally strong?” Knowing that Du Feilong had led Experiment Three to two championships in recent years made me think that there was no way Chu Yuetao could compare. Zhongqi Senior nodded: “Yes, he is at the top among the city’s Five Great Point Guards, nicknamed ‘Dragon Young Master’, standing at 1.87 meters tall. He has left behind other four guards like ‘Yang Shuai’ Zhao Ziyang, ‘Wind God’ Jiang Lingfeng, ‘Light of the Son’ Shangguan Leinuo, and ‘Cold Swordsman’ Yang Zhaowei. After graduating last year, seven prestigious universities from UBA (University Basketball Association) sent him invitations. He is definitely going to enter professional basketball.”
“Has Chu Yuetao reached a level similar to that of Du Feilong?” I asked Zhongqi Senior. He first smiled before slowly replying: “I don’t mean that Chu Yuetao's skills can match those of Du Feilong. He still has a long way to go; it’s more about his style and dominance on the court.” After hearing this, I fell into deep thought as Teacher Qiu called us over to discuss strategies for the third quarter. He decided that we three would stay on court while having Zhongqi Senior come off as an emergency player. It was rare for Teacher Qiu to trust us like this; we must seize this opportunity to defeat Shi Er Zhong!
As halftime ended, we walked out of the Locker Room. Once on court for the third quarter's start with our possession, after receiving the ball from Li Kanglin, I began organizing our offense. As I dribbled past midcourt, I noticed that Chu Yuetao was closely guarding me. Using my signature move “Lingbo Microstep”, I got past him and made a mid-range shot successfully. Quickly after that, as soon as he served again, he dashed towards our basket with great strides while suddenly accelerating towards it; however, he met with a block from Tu Lei. As he deflected his shot while colliding with Tu Lei, the referee immediately blew his whistle—the ball went through the net—and ruled it as a blocking foul on Tu Lei, giving Chu Yuetao an opportunity for an additional free throw.
Walking slowly towards the free-throw line while bending over with both hands on his knees gasping for breath showed that his stamina had also significantly dropped. He steadied himself before taking his shot and scored—69-58—still maintaining an eleven-point lead. After we served again, I held onto the ball for a fast break; running towards the right corner of the baseline, I lobbed it to where A Fei was positioned at the free-throw line. Upon receiving it, he immediately took a shot but missed as it bounced off the rim; however, it was grabbed by Pei Xinliang, who then made a long pass back to where Jia Yu was waiting in backcourt. Ouyang chased after him defensively as he suddenly threw it backward toward an incoming Chu Yuetao, who caught it effortlessly and scored with ease—69-60—unexpectedly allowing them to execute a fast break against us.
