“Dark Council...”
I whispered the name left by Li Ming, a strange chill creeping up from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head.
This apocalypse was even more thrilling than I had imagined, with various Unique Ability organizations emerging one after another, as if the entire human race had suddenly developed a case of "late-stage delusions of grandeur."
Li Ming's terrified eyes told me that this “Dark Council” was no joke.
They were not the kind of petty thieves shouting “delusional slogans” while robbing people; they were the real players lurking in the shadows.
I gazed at the ruins of the distant mall and recalled Li Ming's warning before he left.
Our destination, that so-called paradise rich in supplies, seemed to harbor even greater dangers.
But no matter what lay ahead, for the sake of survival and to grow stronger, we had to keep moving forward.
I couldn’t continue to flounder like a headless chicken in the ruins.
I needed a more stable source of supplies, a safer and more reliable shelter, and most importantly—I needed allies.
Those who managed to survive in this hellish world all had some skills.
Someone as weak as Li Ming wouldn’t last long, even if he got lucky for a moment.
And this person beside me...
I turned to look at Zhong Dali.
He was still savoring my earlier “One Punch Man” performance, his mouth agape as if an apple could fit inside, his eyes filled with awe and just a hint of... foolishness.
“Old Wei, you... you were amazing just now! Like... like a superhero on TV!”
He finally snapped back to reality, looking at me with admiration that was so sincere it made me feel a bit shy.
"That's good."
I feigned calmness as I waved my hand, but inside I was plotting how to make use of this "dim-witted" strongman.
Although he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, his strength was truly extraordinary.
In this perilous post-apocalyptic world, having a teammate with the attributes of a "human bulldozer" was like having a walking cheat code.
"Old Wei, let's go to the mall! You're so strong; you must be able to find plenty of food!"
Zhong Dali brought up the mall again, his eyes sparkling with a desire for food, like a Husky spotting a bone.
"Going to the mall is a must, but we need to be prepared."
I decided to go with the flow and guide him towards the mall, which was my destination for the Information Group.
"There will definitely be many zombies in the mall, and we might encounter other survivors too."
I intentionally emphasized the dangers of the mall to gauge his reaction.
"Zombies? I'm not afraid! I can knock them away!"
Zhong Dali clenched his fists, producing cracking sounds from his bones.
He seemed to regard zombies as nothing more than slow-moving punching bags.
I felt a surge of excitement; it appeared that not only was he strong, but his physical fitness and resilience were also far beyond that of an average person.
He was a born meat shield!
"Alright then, let's head to the mall!"
I made the decision.
Going to the mall would allow us to gather supplies and trigger plot points from the Information Group, such as encountering Mutated Zombies and other survivors.
Most importantly, I could use the mall's complex environment to test Zhong Dali's true abilities, to see just how "dim-witted" he really was, and how "powerful" he could be.
We headed towards the mall.
The ruins along the way became denser, and the stench in the air grew more intense.
Occasionally, a few Zombies wandered about; upon sensing the presence of the living, they immediately let out low growls and staggered toward us.
"Wow!"
Zhong Dali shouted excitedly, charging forward like a tank without waiting for my command, heading straight for the Zombies.
He didn't use any techniques; it was pure brute force.
With one punch each, those Zombies didn't even have a chance to get close before being sent flying by his immense strength, crashing into walls and shattering into pieces.
His "dim-witted" fighting style made my eyes twitch in disbelief.
This guy really didn't care about his own body!
However, it was precisely his "mindless" charge that made him even more terrifying and unpredictable.
While most survivors would cautiously evade and look for opportunities, he just went straight in!
This undoubtedly put immense psychological pressure on the enemy.
Before long, we arrived at the entrance of the mall.
The massive glass facade lay shattered, debris and remnants of vehicles piled up at the entrance.
Inside the mall, darkness enveloped everything, resembling a gaping maw of a colossal beast, exuding an aura of danger.
"Be careful; we don't know what to expect inside," I warned Zhong Dali, while keeping a vigilant eye on our surroundings.
Malls are complex structures with limited visibility, making them favorite hiding spots for zombies and dangerous survivors alike.
"Yeah! Old Wei, don’t worry, I’ll protect you!" Zhong Dali assured me with a thump on his chest, his earnest expression almost convincing me.
We cautiously stepped into the mall.
As soon as we entered, a musty, decaying odor assaulted our senses.
The floor was littered with shards of glass, remnants of shelves, and various unidentified stains.
A nauseating stench filled the air—an unmistakable scent unique to zombies.
I immediately held my breath and activated my "Soul Devouring Immunity Evolution" ability, instantly heightening all my sensory perceptions.
Everything around me became clearer: shadows moving in dark corners, low growls behind shelves, and even subtle vibrations on the ground...
These were all signs of zombie presence.
We advanced along the broken corridor, each step taken with utmost caution.
Zhong Dali followed closely behind me; his large frame appeared somewhat clumsy in the narrow passage, yet he remained exceptionally alert, his eyes scanning the area like searchlights.
Suddenly, a shadow burst out from a nearby shop!
It was an ordinary Zombie, half of its face rotting away, with only one murky eye remaining. It opened its bloodied mouth wide and lunged towards us.
"Roar—"
Zhong Dali reacted swiftly. Before the Zombie could get close, he swung his fist, as large as a sandbag!
"Bang!"
Another loud crash echoed through the air!
The Zombie flew backward as if hit by a cannonball, tumbling through the air before crashing through the wall of the shop opposite us, sending up a cloud of dust.
"Wow! He sent it flying!"
Zhong Dali exclaimed excitedly, a victorious smile on his face.
I cursed him silently as an "idiot," but I had to admit that his strength was indeed monstrous.
This brute-force approach, though rough around the edges, was highly efficient for dealing with ordinary Zombies.
We pressed deeper into the mall.
The number of Zombies we encountered increased significantly; they surged out from every corner in groups, far more than those outside.
Zhong Dali entered "battle mode."
He resembled an enraged brown bear, swinging his fists and sending the approaching Zombies flying one after another.
His roars, the Zombies' shrieks, and the sounds of bodies crashing into shelves and walls mixed together, transforming the entire mall into a colossal monster fighting arena.
I did not stand idly by.
While Zhong Dali was busy confronting the zombies head-on, I moved like a nimble cheetah, weaving through the horde of zombies.
I avoided the chaos created by Zhong Dali and focused on attacking those zombies that flanked us from the sides and behind.
My strikes were more precise and lethal.
Utilizing the speed and agility granted by Soul Devouring Immunity Evolution, I maneuvered behind a zombie and delivered a fatal blow.
I did not devour these ordinary zombies; their immunity offered little enhancement for me now.
I needed to conserve my abilities for the more dangerous mutants or humans.
Zhong Dali and I worked together surprisingly well—he charged in headfirst while I cleaned up from the flanks, taking care of the enemies he overlooked.
Though he barreled through like a brute, his immense strength compensated for his shortcomings.
Meanwhile, I handled the corners he couldn't cover and dealt with enemies that required finesse to defeat.
Just as we were caught up in our slaughter, a piercing alarm suddenly blared!
"Beep—beep—beep—"
The alarm echoed through the empty mall, carrying an ominous premonition.
My expression changed; this old mall's alarm system should have been long defunct. Why was it suddenly going off?
Could it be… someone else was here?
"Wow! What is that sound?!"
Zhong Dali also stopped his movements, looking around in confusion.
I felt a surge of dread.
The alarm sound would undoubtedly attract all the Zombies in the vicinity, as well as any dangerous survivors that might be lurking here!
“Dali! Find a place to hide!”
I shouted, pulling Zhong Dali toward the nearest shop.
But it was already too late.
The alarm seemed to act as a signal, and the Zombies, which had previously been moving sporadically, suddenly became frantic.
They surged in from all directions, a dark mass surrounding us completely!
Moreover, I sensed a powerful presence rapidly approaching.
It was not the aura of an ordinary Zombie.
It was… a Mutated Zombie!
My heart sank.
