"Have there been any major events in the past two years while I was in seclusion on the Tibet Plateau?" Jiang Chen casually asked.
"Uh, not really. Even if there were, they wouldn't be worth mentioning in front of you," Liu Pingping replied with a smile.
Xiong Sumei felt a chill run down her spine. Observing Liu Pingping's attitude towards Jiang Chen revealed much; Mr. Jiang's background was likely beyond imagination. Moreover, it was clear from Liu Pingping's gaze that she had feelings for Jiang Chen, while Jiang Chen seemed indifferent to her.
The phrase "the flowers have intentions, but the water flows coldly" perfectly described the relationship between Liu Pingping and Jiang Chen, Xiong Sumei thought. However, she couldn't help but wonder if Jiang Chen's standards were too high; how could he not be interested in such a stunning beauty like Liu Pingping?
"Let's eat," Jiang Chen said with a smile, choosing not to pry further.
Although Liu Pingping had much to say, she refrained from speaking too freely with Xiong Sumei present.
After finishing their meal, Liu Pingping asked, "Mr. Jiang, can I accompany you to Shanghai tomorrow?" Her tone was filled with anticipation.
"What do you need to go to Shanghai for?" Jiang Chen inquired.
"Uh, I happen to have a business trip to Shanghai," Liu Pingping explained, avoiding being too direct about wanting to visit Quiet Villa.
"Focus on your work first. I have some matters to attend to when I return and won't have time to entertain you. Plus, the New Year is approaching. You can come to Shanghai after the holiday," Jiang Chen said, seeing through Liu Pingping's intentions.
"Then where will you be spending the New Year, Mr. Jiang? In Shanghai or Nangang?" Liu Pingping asked.
"Neither. I'm planning to go to my godmother's house. I haven't seen them in two years, so I need to spend some time with them," Jiang Chen replied with a smile, thinking of his godparents and Jiang Lu, feeling a warmth in his heart.
"Oh, Mr. Jiang, you have a godmother? They are also from your hometown in Southeast Province, Qingcheng County, right?" Liu Pingping asked, surprised.
"You seem quite knowledgeable about my hometown. However, my godmother lives in Ontario Liufei City!" Jiang Chen chuckled.
Liu Pingping's face flushed slightly with embarrassment. In fact, for the past couple of years before the New Year, she had tried to visit Quiet Villa but had not seen Jiang Chen. She also went to Nangang but found no trace of him there either. She learned that Jiang Chen's hometown was in Qingcheng County and even made a trip there but returned disappointed. Originally, she thought that even if Jiang Chen wasn't home, it would be nice to spend time with his family.
However, she didn't expect that Jiang Chen's parents were no longer around; only his grandparents and uncles remained in Qingcheng. It was said that they didn't have a good relationship with Jiang Chen, so naturally, Liu Pingping couldn't stay there for the New Year.
Thinking of this, Liu Pingping couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Jiang, will you be visiting Qingcheng for New Year's greetings?"
"No," Jiang Chen replied bluntly without hesitation. He had no good impression of his grandparents and an even worse one of Jiang Guangming.
"However, I might go back to Qingcheng before the New Year for a class reunion," he added.
"Oh." Liu Pingping wanted to suggest spending the New Year together with Jiang Chen but found it hard to voice her thoughts.
Seeing Liu Pingping's demeanor resembling that of a lovesick girl made Xiong Sumei raise her eyebrows in surprise; it seemed she truly liked Jiang Chen.
As for Xiong Sumei's feelings towards Jiang Chen, they were purely gratitude and curiosity. She didn't deny that he possessed some abilities and perhaps had a background, but honestly speaking, his charm wasn't all that impressive. After all, looking at him from an external perspective—his height and appearance were nothing extraordinary—so why did someone of Liu Pingping's status and beauty feel compelled to lower herself before him?
