With the referee's whistle, our match began. The referee tossed the coin, but with a "clink," he made a mistake and failed to catch it; the coin fell to the ground and rolled away. The referee awkwardly blushed and bent down to look for the coin, and we six also helped search for it. Staff members came in to assist, creating quite a spectacle on the court as over a dozen people bent down searching for the coin. "Referee, do you only have one coin?" I asked him. The referee replied sternly, "There is only one designated for the match, but I have plenty of my own." He pulled out about ten coins from his pocket.
I was at a loss for words: "Then why not just use one of your coins for the match?" The referee shook his head, "No way, that coin is provided by the organizing committee; this one is mine. We can't mix them up; it's very strict." "What's so different about the coin from the organizing committee? Is it custom-made for the tournament?" I continued to question him. The referee shook his head again, "No, it's just an ordinary coin, no different from the one in my hand." I was completely speechless; this referee was so stubborn that I couldn't communicate with him anymore. There was nothing else to do but continue searching.
"Found it! It's heads; we have possession!" Ouyang exclaimed. We gathered around to see the coin lying quietly at the edge of the grass, heads facing up. The referee picked up the coin and signaled for the game to start. We took possession at the top of the arc; after receiving the ball from Ouyang, I faced Kyo Kusanagi's defense and executed my unique skill, "Lingbo Microstep." After faking him out, I shot a mid-range jumper that hit its mark. Kyo Kusanagi glanced at me before running to receive an inbound pass. He dribbled towards me quickly; I stayed tight on defense. Suddenly, he tossed the ball high into the air with one hand. The ball flew over four meters high before landing in front of their player with yellow foil hair. The latter caught it and made a distant hook shot that went in. Given Kyo Kusanagi's smooth technique, it wasn't surprising that he had a high shooting percentage.
Although the alternative trio's fundamentals weren't too solid, their flashy and unique style aligned with Street Basketball's concept of style over substance. However, we were more of a powerhouse team and had been leading them throughout the game. With just one minute left in the match, we led them by six points at 17-11. It was now their possession; after receiving an inbound pass, Kyo Kusanagi ran to a 45-degree angle and took a shot. When I jumped to block it, I realized he hadn't actually shot; the ball had vanished! He had feigned a jump shot and let it drop down his arm instead. Foil Hair picked up the ball and passed it directly to Zero Degree Angle Hair, who took a three-pointer that went in! With 41 seconds left in the game, there was still a chance for them.
After we inbounded, I held onto the ball and ran to waste time at the top of the arc. Kyo Kusanagi came over to steal it; I spun past him but didn't expect Foil Hair was already waiting for me here. He slapped the ball out of my hands and took possession before sprinting back out to Zero Degree Angle Hair again for another three-pointer that missed this time. A Fei grabbed an essential rebound and passed it to me; I bounced-passed it to Ouyang on the right wing. Ouyang jumped up and scored! With 18 seconds left in the game, we had essentially secured victory.
After Spirit Serpent Team inbounded, Kyo Kusanagi strolled over to the top of the arc with the ball while I positioned myself in front of him. He dribbled behind his back a few times before passing directly behind him to Zero Degree Angle Hair. Zero Degree Angle Hair caught it and took another three-pointer right in front of A Fei, which went in! With eight seconds remaining, we inbounded again and started wasting time as I passed to Ouyang who then passed to A Fei. A Fei attempted a hook shot under the basket but got blocked just as time expired. We ultimately won against Spirit Serpent Team, advancing into this tournament's quarterfinals. Unexpectedly, these three flashy players had some skill; their last-minute shots were quite accurate and gave us quite a scare within that final minute! Nevertheless, we ended up smiling in victory while wondering how Haoshuai's Mortal Team was faring in their match.
"Wow, we made it to the quarterfinals!" Ouyang clapped his hands as he approached us. "See? With our trio working together, there's no opponent we can't defeat!" Ouyang boasted loudly. Nearby players from Spirit Serpent Team overheard him and walked over. "Hey, don't be so cocky; you only beat us! We know our own strength isn't great, but there are many strong teams waiting to teach you a lesson!" Kyo Kusanagi glared at us. Ouyang turned around with a smile: "Hey buddy, I'm just joking! Why take it so seriously? We're not stronger than you guys; we just got lucky!" Ouyang quickly explained himself to avoid escalating any conflict due to his big mouth.
After giving a cold laugh, Kyo Kusanagi disdainfully replied: "Well then, should we apologize for bothering you?" Hearing this made me furious; I could see some resemblance between Spirit Serpent Team and Fantasy Team. Why did we have to run into such teams? "Buddy, you're overthinking it; we respect everyone who loves Street Basketball. Really, it's just a game—on this court, heroes are not judged by wins or losses," A Fei chimed in as well. Watching them act all high-and-mighty made me particularly uncomfortable; both A Fei and Ouyang seemed too eager to appease them.
"Maybe so; good luck to you all," said Kyo Kusanagi, calling his two teammates as they walked away. I watched their backs as they struck an aggressive pose—it really annoyed me! A Fei noticed my displeasure and patted my shoulder: "Jie, calm down; there's no need to get angry with them. Let's focus on our own game instead—Haoshuai should be playing next door; let's go check on them." As he spoke, A Fei exchanged glances with Ouyang; both wrapped their arms around my shoulders as we headed toward the neighboring court.
