At the opening ceremony, Gu Yan, representing the new students, took the stage to speak. Under the spotlight, he wore a simple white shirt, standing tall with features so handsome they seemed to have stepped right out of a comic. His voice was cool and steady, but as for the content... I didn't catch a single word, too busy with my own thoughts.
"Look at him acting all high and mighty, like someone owes him eight million," I muttered to myself. "Gao Ling Zhi Hua? More like Mount Everest—freezing and unapproachable."
Beside me, my roommate Tao Tao nudged my arm, her voice barely above a whisper in excitement. "Wan Wan, look! Gu Yan, the Snow God! He’s a thousand times more handsome in person! I think I’m going to faint!"
I rolled my eyes. "Handsome doesn’t put food on the table. Besides," I lowered my voice, "let me tell you, people like him are the hardest to deal with. He looks aloof, but who knows how much of a central air conditioner he is behind the scenes? Keep your distance for your own good."
Tao Tao gave me a look that said "you just don’t get it," continuing to swoon over him.
I ignored her and pulled out my phone, quickly tapping on the Mobile Game icon. Sure enough, that familiar gray avatar was lit up with a little red dot next to it.
It was a message from Zero.
"Lazy fish, are you awake? Are we doing today’s daily tasks?" followed by a Dog Head emoji from Jian Xi Xi.
My fingers flew over the screen as I replied quickly: "Yes! Daddy will take you flying!"
"Hah, quite the attitude. Who was it that got chased and beaten by wild monsters last night?"
"That was an accident! If they dare come again, just watch me wipe the floor with them!"
Through the screen, I could almost picture Zero chuckling. Bickering with him had become part of my daily routine. Although we had never met in person and I had barely heard his voice (he rarely used his mic and when he did, it was deep and crackly), I felt an uncanny connection with him.
Once the opening ceremony ended, the crowd dispersed like a tide. I was focused on replying to Zero's message and didn't pay attention to where I was going, nearly bumping into someone.
"Sorry, sorry!" I quickly apologized as I looked up, only to find myself staring into Gu Yan's cold eyes.
He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and gave me a brief glance before walking past without saying a word, leaving me standing there feeling flustered.
"…What bad luck," I muttered under my breath before hastily pulling Tao Tao away.
Later that night back in the dormitory, I still hadn’t finished my daily tasks when another message from Zero came through.
"Today I ran into a clumsy person who almost bumped into me—can’t even walk without looking."
My heart skipped a beat; reflexively, I replied: "What a coincidence! I almost bumped into someone too—an ice-cold face who was super annoying!"
Zero: "Oh? How annoying?"
I typed furiously: "You know the type—looks good but walks around with a permanent scowl like everyone owes him money! Just seeing him makes me want to take a detour!"
There was silence on his end for a moment before he replied with one word: "Mm."
And then there was nothing more.
What a strange fellow. I shrugged and didn’t think much of it, continuing to immerse myself in the fierce battle against the Dungeon Boss.
With the start of College Life, I fully embraced my lazy nature. I arrived at class just in time, rushed out the moment it ended, skipped all club activities, and spent most of my time holed up in my dorm playing games or binge-watching shows with Tao Tao.
