Ever since Gu Yan guessed my game ID last time, I've been feeling a bit anxious. Although Zero said I was overthinking it, my intuition told me that things weren't that simple. I started to subconsciously observe Gu Yan around campus, trying to find any common ground between him and Zero. The result? Aside from both being male, it seemed they had nothing in common.
Gu Yan remained the same aloof academic type, solitary and terse with his words. In contrast, Zero was lively online, like an energetic husky, full of playful banter and occasionally quite annoying. How could these two possibly be the same person? I must have been losing my mind.
Just as I was about to abandon this ridiculous notion, a new trouble arose.
Su Yao, the belle of our department and one of the sources of my past frustrations, began to openly pursue Gu Yan.
Su Yao was indeed beautiful, came from a good family, and had a charming personality that made her popular among the boys. Her approach to winning Gu Yan's affection was straightforward and effective—she brought him breakfast, delivered water, saved seats for him, and created various chance encounters, practically announcing to the world her determination to win him over.
Gu Yan's attitude remained as cold as ever; he neither accepted nor outright rejected her advances but simply left her hanging.
However, this did not stop Su Yao from viewing me as an eyesore. Perhaps it was because I occasionally had necessary interactions with Gu Yan while working on our group project for a presentation that made her feel threatened by me.
One day, I went to submit the final printed version of our presentation and happened to run into Su Yao blocking the entrance to Gu Yan's dormitory building. Upon seeing me, she immediately lifted her chin like a proud peacock and deliberately spoke in a voice loud enough for those nearby to hear, "Some people just don't know their place. They think they can climb up by getting close to someone through work without considering their own worth."
I paused for a moment, nearly rolling my eyes in response. Seriously? Missy, I'm really not interested in your Everest over there!
I walked past her without looking sideways and prepared to enter the building.
"Stop!" Su Yao insisted, stepping forward to block my path. "Xia Wan, right? I warn you to stay away from Gu Yan! He’s not someone like you can fantasize about!"
I couldn't help but laugh in anger. "Su Yao, first of all, my relationship with Gu Yan is purely that of classmates and group members. Secondly, what gives you the right to warn me? His girlfriend? As far as I know, he's still single."
Su Yao's face flushed red from my retort before she became furious. "He will be mine sooner or later! Just don’t be an eyesore here!"
"Whether I'm an eyesore or not isn't for you to decide." I was too lazy to argue further. "Please move aside; I still need to submit my assignment."
"You!" Su Yao was so enraged that she actually reached out to push me.
I had anticipated this and sidestepped just in time; she missed and nearly fell over.
"Su Yao!" Gu Yan's cold voice suddenly came from the entrance of the building.
We both turned our heads at once to see Gu Yan standing there with a frown, looking displeased at Su Yao.
Upon seeing him, Su Yao immediately changed her demeanor and pitifully said, "A Yan, she's bullying me..."
Gu Yan ignored her completely and focused his gaze on me—specifically on the folder in my hands. "Is that for me?"
"Yes." I nodded and handed him the folder.
He took it without even glancing at Su Yao and said to me, "Thank you for your hard work," before turning around and heading into the dormitory.
This left Su Yao standing there alone, her face shifting between shades of green and white as she stomped her feet in frustration.
I felt a surge of satisfaction inside, raised an eyebrow at her, and turned to leave. That's what you get for being so arrogant!
