Time flew by quickly, and before I knew it, the end of the semester had arrived. My relationship with Gu Yan had transformed from initial awkwardness into a natural camaraderie. We studied together, shared meals, watched movies, and of course, fought side by side in the gaming world.
The glances from our classmates shifted from shock to acceptance, and some even began to ship us as a couple. Tao Tao was particularly excited, constantly whispering in my ear, "Wan Wan! I told you Gu Yan, the Scholar, definitely has feelings for you! See? I was right! You two are just too sweet!"
I would dismiss her with a "You're overthinking it," but inside, I felt like I was buzzing with happiness.
During finals week, the library became our second home. Gu Yan, being the Scholar he was, naturally became my personal "tutor." His explanations were clear and patient, even more reliable than our professors. With his help, I felt as if my Ren Du Er Mai had been unblocked, and my study efficiency skyrocketed.
Of course, I made sure to "return the favor." For instance, when he was frowning over a discussion question for a history elective, I would hand him a carefully compiled "exam point prediction." Or when he got so engrossed in coding that he forgot to eat, I would quietly bring him a warm meal.
This mutual companionship and progress felt truly wonderful.
After finishing our last exam, we were both exhausted. Gu Yan suggested, "How about we go to an internet café all night to celebrate?"
"Sounds great!" I perked up immediately. Since dropping my disguise, we hadn't played games together offline yet.
That evening, we found a two-person booth at an internet café. Sitting side by side with headphones on, we logged into the game.
Seeing our familiar characters "Zero" and "Salted Fish Thrust" standing together on the screen and then glancing at Gu Yan's profile just inches away brought about a strange sensation within me.
In that moment, the virtual and the real perfectly overlapped.
"Are you ready, Little Salty Fish?" Gu Yan turned his head and smiled at me. His voice came through the headphones—both magnetic like Zero's and clear like Gu Yan's.
"I'm ready, Zero!" I responded with a bright smile.
As usual, we charged into battle in the game, coordinating with each other and occasionally teasing one another. But this time felt entirely different.
I could clearly hear his breathing quicken with nervousness; I could see the corners of his mouth lift after a brilliant move; I could feel his exasperated yet affectionate sighs when I made mistakes.
After an intense battle, only the two of us remained on the map. The moonlight bathed our characters in a serene glow, creating a quiet yet beautiful atmosphere.
Gu Yan maneuvered his character next to mine and suddenly sent a trade request.
Confused, I opened it to find a sparkling piece of top-tier mage equipment that I had long coveted but never managed to obtain.
"!!!" I was shocked. "Zero! Where did you get this?! Aren't you a warrior?"
"I farmed it for you all night yesterday," he typed in the team channel casually.
My heart felt as if it had been struck hard by something, both sour and soft.
"Gu Yan..." I took off my headphones and turned to look at him.
He happened to turn his head as well, his gaze gentle as he looked at me. The dim light in the room blurred the angles of his face, but made his eyes appear particularly bright.
"Xia Wan," he began, his voice low and serious, "before, Zero was your Zero. From now on, Gu Yan will be your exclusive Zero, okay?"
I stared at his face so close to mine, watching my reflection in his eyes, my heart racing as if it would leap out of my chest.
After a thousand words, all that came out was a firm nod.
"Mm!"
He smiled, then slowly leaned closer.
Outside the window, the city remained noisy, but inside the room, the world of me and my exclusive Zero was quiet, filled only with the sound of our heartbeats.
Our story had just begun to unfold.
