On that day, Ye Chen was taking a nap when he was suddenly startled awake by the sound of Pei Guanjing pushing open the door.
He squinted his eyes, reluctantly opening one, and mumbled, "What is it?"
"Come with me." Pei Guanjing offered no further explanation and simply reached out to straighten the blanket around him.
Ye Chen had been at the Regent's residence for over half a month, and this was the first time he was being taken out. Instantly alert, he sat up abruptly, asking, "Where are we going?"
Pei Guanjing lowered his head, helping him fasten the buttons of his outer robe. The cloud patterns embroidered with silver thread on the cuffs shimmered faintly in the morning light. "You'll know when we get there."
The two of them walked through the winding corridors of Wen Xin Zhai and climbed into a carriage at the corner gate of the royal residence.
As the wheels rumbled over the cobblestones, Ye Chen tilted his head to observe Pei Guanjing, who had closed his eyes to rest. This person usually wore light-colored robes, but now he had changed into a dark-colored long robe. The jade pendant at his waist clinked softly with the jolting of the carriage.
"This direction doesn't seem like it's leading out of the city," Ye Chen suddenly straightened up. "I'm not leaving the capital until next month. You’re not trying to send me back to Chongzhou early, are you?"
Pei Guanjing opened his eyes and gently brushed his fingers over Ye Chen's tousled hair. "I'm not sending you away; I'm taking you to meet an old friend."
After half an hour, the carriage stopped in a pine forest on the outskirts of the city. Mo Sheng lifted the curtain, and just as Ye Chen was about to get out, Pei Guanjing half-carried him down—this carriage was quite high off the ground.
Once Ye Chen steadied himself and looked up, he froze in shock.
It appeared to be a mass graveyard, with corpses scattered everywhere. In the distance, several dogs with red eyes were glaring hungrily in their direction.
"You brought me to a graveyard?" Ye Chen took a step back, his jade pendant bumping against Pei Guanjing's knee. "In broad daylight, why bring me here to see old friends? They're all dead; what's there to see?"
Pei Guanjing grasped his icy fingertips and led him deeper into the pine forest.
The autumn wind grew fiercer as they hurried along. Pei Guanjing quickly adjusted Ye Chen's clothing and held him tightly in his embrace, saying, "A Chen, look over there."
Following the direction pointed out by Pei Guanjing, Ye Chen looked over and saw a figure standing next to a corpse in the distance. The person looked somewhat familiar. As Pei Guanjing led him closer, Ye Chen realized that it was Li Wangcai.
Pei Guanjing's expression darkened as he stared at Li Wangcai, who was standing beside the corpse in the mass grave.
Li Wangcai's gaze was fixed on Ren Wang, who lay lifeless on the ground, unmoving for a long time, as if he were a statue.
After a while, he slowly raised his head and looked at Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen, asking in a cold tone, "Did you kill him?"
Pei Guanjing replied icily, "Are you planning to take revenge for him?"
Li Wangcai shook his head and said, "He saved me from a pile of corpses back then, and I have long since repaid his kindness over the years. Moreover, his actions in recent years have truly disgusted me. He is dead now; it doesn’t matter to me. I won’t seek revenge for him."
As he spoke, he glanced at Pei Guanjing's grim face and then at Ye Chen, who was tightly held in Pei Guanjing's arms. He asked, "Are you here to settle accounts with me over Ye Chen?"
Pei Guanjing responded coldly, "Exactly. You kidnapped him and hurt him; I will not let him suffer these injuries for nothing."
Li Wangcai nodded in realization.
However, instead of leaving, he took a few steps forward and stood in front of Ye Chen.
Pei Guanjing watched him with an increasingly icy gaze.
Then Li Wangcai bowed to Ye Chen.
Straightening up, he looked at Ye Chen and said solemnly, "Ren Wang had been kind to me; I cannot betray him. It was I who kidnapped you from the Military Camp; I take full responsibility for that. You can kill me or do whatever you want; I will accept it."
With that, he stood there as if challenging Pei Guanjing to strike him. His fearless demeanor evoked a sense of admiration in Ye Chen. Thus, Ye Chen said, "Captain Li, we have been colleagues for a year in the Military Camp. You were working for Ren Wang and did not intend to take my life. This matter has its own roots; now that Ren Wang is dead, we are even. You can leave."
Ye Chen now felt that if he didn't let Li Wangcai leave soon, given Pei Guanjing's ruthless demeanor when he killed Ren Wang, it was likely that Li Wangcai would end up dead right there.
He began to ponder what kind of person Pei Guanjing really was. He seemed so fond of tranquility on ordinary days, yet when it came to killing, he did so without a flicker of an eye. And he had brought him to the mass grave to ambush someone; did he already anticipate that Li Wangcai would come to retrieve Ren Wang's body?
Ye Chen couldn't see Ren Wang's face because he was wrapped tightly in a tangle of grass mats. It appeared that when Li Wangcai was taking him away for burial, Pei Guanjing's men had discovered them.
Ye Chen had said all this in hopes of preventing Li Wangcai from dying there, but Li Wangcai remained unmoving, defiantly locking eyes with Pei Guanjing.
Pei Guanjing's gaze upon him was unmistakably that of someone looking at a corpse.
The meaning was clear: you hurt my A Chen, and no matter who you are, you must die.
Pei Guanjing's right hand twitched slightly, ready to strike.
He thought to himself that out of consideration for the year he had known Li Wangcai, he wouldn't let him die too painfully; a single palm strike to his heart would suffice to end it swiftly.
However, as soon as his right hand moved, Ye Chen sensed it.
Ye Chen quickly reached out and grabbed Pei Guanjing's hand, turning to Li Wangcai with a stern expression. "Leave now."
But Li Wangcai was also a stubborn person and stood there unmoving.
