The past two years have been the most relaxed and joyful time for Ye Chen since he arrived in this world. Of course, there were some minor inconveniences, particularly with Pei Guanjing and Lou Yu, who seemed to have gotten wind of his whereabouts and sent him letters every day.
The letters were either about some treasure they had acquired or inquiries about where they planned to go next, asking him what they should bring along.
Ye Chen felt overwhelmed by it all. Did he really have the time to deal with them? Besides, was it necessary to send letters every day? Surely, he could keep track of the major events happening in the world while residing in the royal palace.
In these two years, many things had transpired. Time flew by swiftly, and the youthful innocence in his eyes had blossomed into a striking presence, a vibrant color that stood out like a beacon against the snowy landscape.
“Your Highness, something has happened to the prince! Something has happened!” Suddenly, a young servant burst through the courtyard door, shouting loudly.
Ye Chen sprang to his feet, fists clenched tightly, his gaze sharpening instantly. “Xiao Yan, what did you say? Speak slowly.”
He grabbed Xiao Yan's arm with such force that his knuckles turned white as he urgently questioned him. Xiao Yan paused for a moment, panting heavily before saying, “Your Highness, it’s bad! The prince's army was ambushed at midnight by Lin Prefecture's forces. The losses were severe, and the prince is currently missing.”
Upon hearing this, Ye Chen furrowed his brows, worry and anger flashing in his eyes. “Enough! Don’t say any more. Gather all the guards from the palace and the Dark Guard. We must set out together to bring my father back.”
Xiao Yan nodded repeatedly and hurried off to carry out the orders.
Ye Chen quickly packed his belongings, deftly stuffing clothes into his bag as he prepared to personally seek out Liu Jin.
After changing into plain clothes, Ye Chen rushed into the fallen Ancheng Military Camp under the escort of the Dark Guard arranged by Liu Jin. This was where Liu Jin had last disappeared. Although the Lin Prefecture forces had retreated for now, they could very well return for another strike. Liu Jin might still be hiding in some corner.
Currently, only a squad of Centaurs was stationed here from Lin Prefecture while the main forces continued their pursuit of the Chongzhou Army.
Fortunately, General Huo was a good brother who had grown up alongside his father. At this moment, fighting under his father’s name helped maintain morale among the Chongzhou Army; otherwise, if their spirits broke, Ancheng would likely fall.
From a distance, the two armies clashed, flames lighting up the sky. Ye Chen, protected by his guards, swung his sword to fend off the minor soldiers, his gaze resolutely scanning for any possible clues related to Liu Jin.
Time was of the essence; he needed to find Liu Jin quickly. Not only was he his father, but he was also the hope of all Chongzhou. If anything happened to him, it would likely mean that Chongzhou would meet the same fate as Yunzhou, being divided among the states.
Thinking of this, Ye Chen glanced back and noticed that the number of guards around him was dwindling. The closest one was over ten meters away, blocked by soldiers from Lin Prefecture.
Ye Chen bit his lip, tightened his grip on the sword, and continued running deeper into the fray without looking back.
Meanwhile, Pei Guanjing was anxiously searching for Ye Chen.
After receiving news of Lin Prefecture's surprise attack on Chongzhou and King Huai'an's disappearance, he felt certain that Ye Chen would go looking for Liu Jin. Thus, he traveled day and night without sleep for two days and nights, exhausting three horses to reach Chongzhou Ancheng.
Pei Guanjing dodged the fighting soldiers, skillfully weaving through the crowd. In this chaotic environment where friend and foe were indistinguishable, he didn't want to waste any time; every moment delayed increased Ye Chen's danger.
He searched through the large tents but found nothing; after a thorough search of the Military Camp, he still came up empty-handed.
People rushed about everywhere, yet in this vast sea of humanity, he could not find the one person who occupied his thoughts constantly.
He dared not think about what he would do if something happened to Ye Chen; instead, he hurriedly circled the Military Camp again and again in search of him.
Finally, amidst the towering flames and thick smoke, he spotted Ye Chen’s slender figure moving like a solitary autumn leaf amidst the bustling crowd.
At that moment, Ye Chen also caught sight of Pei Guanjing.
Through tear-filled eyes, his figure, though slender, instantly brought him a sense of stability.
He had grown taller; the once shorter silhouette now stood upright, carrying a hint of grace, yet it seemed fragile enough to bend and break with a gentle curve.
Ye Chen stood still, watching Pei Guanjing slowly approach him, his hands unconsciously trembling slightly.
As tears streamed down his face, he couldn't help but wonder how he ended up here and why he couldn't find his father.
Frozen in place for what felt like an eternity, Pei Guanjing stepped forward and tightly embraced him, one hand gently stroking Ye Chen's back as he softly called out, "A Chen."
In an instant, Ye Chen's tears flowed even more fiercely.
After two years apart, he held him tightly in return, wrapping his arms around Pei Guanjing's waist with all his strength.
Even though he was angry at him, in this moment, he couldn't bear to let go. Finally, the two of them managed to escape the Military Camp against all odds.
In fact, when Pei Guanjing first found Ye Chen, he was already injured. During their escape, he shielded Ye Chen with his body from arrows aimed at him. With pursuers everywhere, his injuries only worsened.
The two stumbled through the darkness, Ye Chen's boots crunching on dry branches that startled a few night owls into calling out. Pei Guanjing's body grew heavier; Ye Chen nearly dragged him along as his back became soaked with cold sweat.
