Three days later, Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen appeared at the dock in Jiangnan.
On that day, Lou Yu had left without anyone knowing when. Ye Chen had only slept through the morning, and by the time he came out, Lou Yu had vanished without a trace. On the entire boat, aside from the boatman, it was just him, Pei Guanjing, and seven or eight attendants.

Ye Chen smiled as he responded, glancing at Pei Guanjing, who looked somewhat awkward yet still gazed at him with warmth. With a slight smirk, he teased, “Oh, he’s my chosen son-in-law.”
Ye Chen was remarkably handsome; even in his early twenties, he retained a youthful charm. Many widows or divorced Tian Qian immediately thought of him and even sought matchmakers to introduce potential suitors. However, during his first month in Jiangnan, Ye Chen rejected all matchmakers, claiming he did not wish to marry again and wanted to honor his late husband. Everyone considered him a rare good Kun Ze for mourning his husband and refusing remarriage; such a Kun Ze was hard to come by.
But as time passed, some Tian Qian began to reconsider their interest in him. After all, who wouldn’t want to marry such an attractive Kun Ze? Thus over the past two years, there were often people coming to propose marriage; they couldn’t be driven away easily.
As soon as this was mentioned, some older women began to gossip: “Young Master Ye Chen, didn’t you say you weren’t going to marry? Liu Matchmaker has introduced you to so many Tian Qian already. As everyone’s gaze shifted, Pei Guanjing smiled lightly. His smile was as cold as frost yet elegant like moonlight, easily capturing hearts. Those who intended to provoke Pei Guanjing suddenly fell silent and found themselves at a loss for words.
It was no wonder Ye Chen chose such an attractive son-in-law after rejecting so many suitors.
At Yangsheng Hall during these days when Ye Chen was absent, Liu Jin understood the common prescriptions well enough that patients could come in directly for medicine. However, without a doctor present for consultations, there weren’t many visitors; only the wind chimes hanging at the door swayed gently in the breeze, producing a clear and pleasant sound.
Upon entering Yangsheng Hall, Liu Jin was holding Xiao Douya, teaching him how to play chess. The child, filled with curiosity, suddenly struggled to get down when he heard a noise by the door.
He then looked blankly at Pei Guanjing standing beside Ye Chen.
Xiao Douya paused for a moment before quickly waddling over to Ye Chen, excitedly exclaiming, "Daddy, you're back!"
Pei Guanjing's eyes instantly filled with tears; this was his and Ye Chen's child, all grown up now.
Liu Jin cleared his throat, and Pei Guanjing quickly bowed respectfully, saying, "Father-in-law."
Liu Jin scrutinized him for a long time before simply responding with a soft "hm," advising, "Since you're back, make sure to live well with Chen Er from now on. Don't think about things that don't belong to you anymore."
"Yes," Pei Guanjing said gently as he looked at Ye Chen holding Xiao Douya. He murmured, "I will stay by their side from now on and will never leave them again. Thank you for taking care of them all these years, Father-in-law."
Liu Jin scoffed lightly, "My own son—do I need you to say such things? Stop rambling and let Lin Er recognize you sooner. He's getting bigger and harder to coax."
Pei Guanjing turned to look at Ye Chen and the child in his arms, smiling as he reached out to hold him. Ye Chen's hand slightly moved as he prepared to pass the child to Pei Guanjing for their father-son reunion.
However, Xiao Douya clung tightly to Ye Chen's neck without any hesitation, refusing to let go. With a hint of a whine in his voice, he said, "Daddy, are you going to sell me? Why are you trying to throw me into this handsome uncle's arms?"
Ye Chen's lips twitched. "He's not a human trafficker; he's your father. Haven't you been asking where your father is? Well, here he is."
Xiao Douya furrowed his little brows and began scrutinizing Pei Guanjing closely. After a long examination and glancing back at Ye Chen and Liu Jin to confirm they weren't lying to him, he finally extended a hand hesitantly toward Pei Guanjing and asked in confusion, "You... you are my... father?"
Pei Guanjing's eyes turned red as he nodded vigorously, his voice slightly choked with emotion. "Yes, I am your father."
Xiao Douya immediately began to struggle, wanting to jump into Pei Guanjing's arms. Ye Chen quickly released his hold and handed the child over to Pei Guanjing. The little guy was growing fast, and carrying him was becoming quite tiring.
"You really are my father. Then why did you only show up now? Other kids say I was picked up by my dad, so I don't have a father."
Xiao Douya's eyes were glistening with unshed tears, and as he spoke, his voice trembled, looking like he was about to cry.
Liu Jin and Ye Chen exchanged a glance and knew that the little one was about to put on a show again. They turned away, pretending not to see. But Pei Guanjing had no idea that his son was already quite skilled at this young age; just a few whimpers and he felt his heart breaking.
"I'm sorry for leaving you, I won't leave you again," Pei Guanjing said, guilt written all over his face as he gently comforted him.
Xiao Douya buried his head in Pei Guanjing's embrace but suddenly lifted it up, his eyes sparkling with hope. "Really?"
Pei Guanjing smiled and nodded confidently. "Really."
Xiao Douya's little mouth curved into a smile, his eyes shining brightly as he looked toward the door and exclaimed loudly, "Then you should tell the other kids that I have a father, and I'm not just picked up!"
Pei Guanjing paused for a moment before bursting into hearty laughter, responding loudly, "Okay!"
In the distance, Ye Chen and Liu Jin watched with smiles as Pei Guanjing lifted Xiao Douya high into the air.
